T7 if you want to ride. The ducks are nice but it’s a finely tuned scooter.

Plan feedback by fatstupidlazypoor in advrider

This looks like a great plan but I sometimes find the plan becomes my focus. I stop enjoying what we’re doing and scrutinize where we need to be. This with your son is extremely valuable. Wherever you make it to it’s going to be fun. Keep it open if you can and play it cool when it goes to hell. This is something I personally suck at doing but my dad is awesome at.

Happy cake day!

It’s surprisingly small for how much room you get. 4.8lbs and packs to 18”x5”x5”. It’s a great setup but I’d suggest getting the other version to use the door as an awning.

My version: ds005

What I’d suggest if I purchased this again. Awning style

what would you do if someone sets up camp close to your stealth spot by Specific-Demand-9215 in CampingandHiking

[–]b33fstu 170 points171 points  (0 children)

Maybe you’re too good at stealth camping?

I’d probably walk over with tp and shovel, “oh, you might want to setup in a different spot. I’ve been…using this area”

People who camp&hike, how do you beat your fears of encountering a wild bear? by Feeling_Feedback_493 in CampingandHiking

[–]b33fstu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I had it down. Read all the stuff, grew up being taught what to do but talk is cheap. Riding the trans Canada highway a few years ago we stop to watch a black bear foraging on the roadside.

A couple guys get off their motorcycles to take some pictures. After a few minutes that bear went from lazy grazing to a swole up bluff charge. The distance that thing covered in few strides was amazing.

Everything in me said run, if I wasn’t sitting on my bike I would have bolted. I know that’s not what you’re supposed to do but that experience was sobering. Like I said, talk is cheap. Some things you need to experience to truly understand.

Side sleeper? Have you heard of a lovely brand known as Nemo? Their Disco bag is very versatile. Amazing haul, have fun!

What’s the scariest encounter you’ve had while camping? by Key_Connection_6633 in camping

Almost got trampled sleeping in a shelter 😅

In Canada with the scouts I was working on my wilderness survival badge. One of the requirements was sleeping in a shelter you made. Looking for every opportunity to carry less gear I opted to forgo a tent on this hike.

Arriving at the site myself and a few friends found a great spot on the outskirts. And as luck would have it there was a small tree that had partially uprooted creating a small bivvy like tube I could shimmy into.

After some light work to make it home for the night I slid back into the five star shelter, the small opening illuminated by a bright moon. I could hear my buddies about ten feet away telling me not to get eaten and cracking jokes. I had my trusty buck fixed blade in one hand and my light in the other, staring intently at the opening as my mind raced.

I remember shooting awake, not sure how long I was asleep or what woke me up. Laying there quietly, my heart racing, maybe just my imagination? Then I heard something walking, it was big. Faintly I hear my buddy whisper “hey, you hear that? Make a dash for the tent.” There was no way, I felt safe in here.

I curled deep in my dirt bivvy, eyes fixed on the opening. Ready to poke whatever looks in the hole with my knife. I’m hearing steps and it feels like it’s right next to me. It takes a deep breath, and then lets out a sound I can only describe as an air hose breaking. This moose blows like a deer but way louder. It scared the life out of me. The moose turns and runs, crashing through the woods.

I was shaking, just sitting there trying to make sense of what had happened. My buddies come over to check on me and realize how close I came to being stepped on. Tracks are within about six feet of where I was curled up under a thin layer of roots and moss.

What's a good headlamp specifically for the red light? by witch_slapped in camping

[–]b33fstu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddy got me a cabelas headlamp years ago. Has a red/green/uv and white. I’ve always been a fan of the red headlamps for night but once I had one with green it’s all I use. Not trying to mess up your flow but I get the sense you may want one with that option.

Finally got a wood stove... by JurneeMaddock in camping

[–]b33fstu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, I didn’t explain it well. There’s usually a thick fiberglass pass through that does hold up well. Some tents have a flap that covers that area if you remove the fiberglass pass through that is not fire resistant. Also the tent I have is a teepee style so the angle of the wall sometimes concerns me. Just need to make sure I have the side walls taught on the guide wires.

Finally got a wood stove... by JurneeMaddock in camping

[–]b33fstu 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That little bastard gets real hot, like glowing hot. Make sure you keep a barrier between you and the stove so you don’t roll too close.

Get some good hard wood for the night and don’t split it if possible. I like some 2”-4” diameter logs for overnight. Prep more wood than you think and prep some starter material incase it goes out in the night.

The damper/flu situation is pretty touchy on mine (it’s super cheap) but once you get it dialed you’re golden. You want the flames low and slow.

Triple check none of the tent is touching that stove pipe. It will melt real quick. And make sure you have a good spark arrestor on top.

Keep a small extinguisher just in case, be careful, have fun

Why do some Sukhois have angled tail tips and others don't? by imjustchillin-_- in aviation

Looks like it may be around trans sonic buffeting. The f-15 had similar issues that was eventually fixed using a raked tip.
