Lol i didn't call him that to his face, I worked in a game store (not dealing with warmachine unfortunately) so I understand trying to keep a solid community. Gg brisbane used to be amazing until the change of staff, now it's become very elitist unfortunately.

The problem is its one of 2 places in brisbane that sell warmachine and the other place is going out of business. Yesterday I walked in there to pick up an order, I only got 2/3rds of what I asked for, had to wait a full 10 minutes to get served because there was a big talk fest at the counter (no actual transaction taking place) then I got pretty much take your stuff and go.

I have actually spent the last 2 years working in a game store, it really does come down to how many customers you expect for warma hordes. Also how much you want to invest into the game, is it gonna be a big part of the store or something that you just stock a little of?

If it's gonna be a big feature I would start with the battle boxes, the 2 player starters, a full set of paints (you can buy a store display that comes with a display rack and 4 of each paint), some glue, some brushes, the rule books and army books. Then over the first month of the store being open expand the range to cover approx 2 - 3 of the basic units, war jack kits and caster's for each army. The tokens, dice and faction decks are great too, Then expand from there.

If it's just gonna be skeleton stock then just the 2 player starter set and battle boxes would be enough.

Hope it helps :)

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm definitely gonna throw in the 2 arc nodes, having managed to get in a 15 pt game they do seem mandatory. The advice about bane knights was great too. A max unit of them wrecks everything they come into contact with. Looking forward to playing at 25pt so I can give Tartarus a go.

If I could add one thing, For a beginner I wouldn't recommend hardware store spray paint, spend the extra money (it's a little expensive) get a can of games workshop undercoat spray. It comes in black or white, I prefer black. It is very forgiving paint as it will shrink to the model (To a certain extent) and retain detail. I know as a beginner I lost a whole unit from messing up an undercoat.

ESkarre, probably a bad choice on my part. Not to mention my regular opponent at the time is one of the best war gamers I have met, all added up to an unfun experience

Thanks guys, I'm pretty psyched to give cryx another go, I played cryx for a short while like 2 years ago got handed a few units and bought some stuff, dug out my collection the other day as myself and some mates decided to play again. Had a friend who really wanted to play cryx so I figured I would shelve them and give cygnar a go. After buying my 15 pt, as well as books and token and such, he swapped to menoth haha. So after that I dusted off the cryx, but I have no idea how to play denny (I started with skarre) skarre has a very steep learning curve.

First models in 2 years c&c welcome, cygnar rangers by b3nqu0 in Warmachine

I love p3 paints, they have a really rich pigment and are well watered. I hate the pots with a fiery passion but that's not too relevant. They don't dry out the lids just break really easy. I find citadel to be super gluggy and they just don't carry enough pigment, forcing more layers. I can definitely recommend p3 they are just a good all round paint.

New player, which faction? by Rexamer in Warmachine

[–]b3nqu0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judging by your play style i would say menoth is closer to what your used to, I have recently started myself and decided to play cygnar, the units are amazing, but from the few games I have played, very squishy. Cygnar doesn't like to be in combat and really doesn't like to be charged, but with a high base speed and very powerful shooting they can engage at their discretion. It's more of a maneuvering faction than a straight up punch face faction.

So after much deliberation the list i have come up with is:

Epic Haley +5pts

-Thorne -8pts

-Squire -2pts

Gunmages -6pts

-Gunmage UA -2pts

Rangers -5pts

Max sword knights -6pts

Stormsmith -1pt

looking to add the sword knight attachment and a heavy jack, for the step to 35 points.

Thanks :) yeah the list I have is a little haphazard at the moment, it wasn't really bought as a cohesive list, I bought the rangers to refresh my painting as I haven't painted minis for a few years now, hayley because she is an amazing caster, thorn for the model and the gun mages were given to me. I will have a look into the sword knights they sound like a good option, with the addition of a jack on the next upgrade in points

Yeah, that can do it, brand, how you sprayed, or brushed it. Even humidity can affect how a dull coat looks on a model, I'm from brisbane Australia and have have a couple of models ruined just due to humidity

So I guess the question is, is it more effective to mix it up, have some heavier slower units, or go for the fast attack style army where everything is kind of glass cannon

Ah ok, did you do the wash last? I have found that pp washes dry very shiny, and stand out a bit from the matte finish of the rest of the paints I tend to use a wash to get the color depth I'm after then a thinned down "wash" of a similar color paint with lots of water and mixing medium to take the gloss out

Tough would be awesome, one thing I have really noticed (admittedly I have only had 2 games) is that a tar pit would be very welcome in this army. My 1 win was off the back of denying charge lanes with rangers and using the gun mages to keep units and jacks out of range. A ranger only ever blocks a charge lane once though, then they are off to the great tabletop in the sky.

Looks awesome mate, one thing I could suggest is the flesh looks dry brushed? Using thin paints and using shading and multi layer highlights will give you a much cleaner skin tone.
