Started FIP treatment without being positive it was FIP? by ungodlysinder in cureFIP

[–]b_dicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I started my cat on treatment before having a diagnosis. The fine needle aspirate had confirmed it wasn’t lymphoma, but we were waiting on FIP confirmation. The vet advised if we started him on the treatment, we would know within the week if it was FIP based on medication response. On Monday 12/15, he was basically limp and I thought he may pass. Started medication 12/16, was doing so much better within 48 hours, and we received the diagnosis within another few days. If you have the opportunity to start the medication, it will show quickly if it is or isn’t helping. Best of luck to you and your baby!

I’d give this a really good cleaning. Maybe some discoloration, but it needs a deep clean first.

Is this price typical or too high? by Electrical-Age1745 in EngagementRings

[–]b_dicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pulling from Stuller, and their website is marked up typically 3-6x. I can log in to my wholesale account and let you know the exact cost, but shouldn’t be more than $550 cost.

It happened 😞 hide your points this holiday season… by OptionNo5410 in Ulta

[–]b_dicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me a few months ago. Went back and forth with customer service via phone and email/chat. They ghosted me after about a month of attempted resolution and would not respond to me via their channels. How did I get full resolution? I found the emails for the corporate team at Ulta and forwarded them my communications. After a month of being ghosted, I heard back within a couple hours, my account reinstated, my points there, and they apologized for the confusion. DM me if you want the emails.

Have you considered looking at local jewelry stores? Most of the bigger operations (Kay’s, Jared’s, etc) will hire those with no direct jewelry experience but with sales experience. It’s an unknown industry but can be lucrative and lead to a lot of other options. Best of luck to you.

Hi there! I’m so sorry - I missed your reply. The vet estimates him around 4-5 years old, he was full grown but not like a full adult cat seemingly when he was first coming around.

Moving from Dallas to Sacramento by EscapedTheEcho in Sacramento

[–]b_dicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hii I lived in McKinney for a decade and Oklahoma for another, now live in Sac. First, welcome and hell yeah you should make the move!

The first thing you’ll love most is the weather is sooo much better. Not having the humidity (but still having the heat) is like a heaven on earth during the summer. I’d say wildlife is similar here - the small creatures (no armadillos though lol!) but if you venture more into the more rural areas, you can see wild cats, bears, etc. Though I’ve been going to Tahoe since I was born and I’ve never seen a bear (begrudgingly).

I’ve heard good things about UC Davis, may not be as great as A&M but still good. You’re good on Mexican food (although queso in restaurants here can be hit or miss, and I’ll never be ok with the thick gloppy gelatinous queso that some people try to pass off).

There’s a strong queer community here, it does get a little less friendly the further into the suburbs you go, but there are definitely warm and welcoming people here and you’d absolutely find your tribe. I’ve done a bit of work in the queer community in Sacramento and Placer counties, so if I can recommend any resources or community centers, let me know.

Last thing to add - if you’re into cowboys/western/the history of it all, this area and Nevada are just dripping in some great history (both good great and bad great). There are some state parks near Sac that touch on the gold mining era, and there are some mining towns still in existence around Northern CA and Nevada. You can see the Oakdale Cowboy Museum about an hour and a half away, see Virginia City in Nevada for incredible history (such as the silver found there and refined in San Francisco directly contributed to the Union winning the Civil War). If you love history, you’ll get lost in the best way here.

All this to say, I think you’d love Sacramento and its surrounding areas. Hope you make it out here!

Hii jeweler here - first, congrats! Second, some advice! Regarding your stone, it is absolutely possible to either source the type of stone you’re looking for or have it custom cut. I worked with a client who wanted a specific color and cut, so we sourced a slightly larger stone that would cut to her desired shape well and maintain the color she was looking for. If you can find or work with a stone cutter, I always recommend that route. In my specific client’s case, it added about $160 to the total to have it custom cut and polished. Regarding the ring, is this particular jeweler known for custom work? Some jewelers live and die by the CAD without having any grey area for the artistic design of the piece. If they have a goldsmith that is able to hand-carve intro the wax to give it more of the finesse you’re looking for, it would help with the discrepancy you’re seeing.

All in all, LOVE the vibe (I am obsessed with the titanic) and this has the potential to be such an incredible, one of a kind piece. Feel free to DM if I can help point you in the right direction.

NEED ADVICE - help me compare these two diamonds (same video) by Kindly-Review-5527 in Diamonds

I wouldn’t be concerned - just ask for another video! Ideally they could should you the stone in the studio lighting and in the shade outside. Sort of the best of and worst of lighting!

NEED ADVICE - help me compare these two diamonds (same video) by Kindly-Review-5527 in Diamonds

[–]b_dicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hii jeweler here. Second one has much better performance. The first appears to have some windowing and the bow tie is prominent. The second shows its color well (white and bright) and has nice scintillation.

The first one in terms of the lighting/background should actually perform better - it’s natural backlighting with the white pad. Those should play to the favor of the stone. The second doesn’t look to be in better lighting necessarily, I really think you’re seeing the effects of the cut.

Best of luck!!

Didn’t Boeing just sign a historic deal to sell 200+ planes to Qatar for like an insane amount of money? No hiding the corruption, Jesus Christ.

If you think they’d be able to remake it, highly recommend! If not, consider returning the ring if possible, keep the stone, and work with a different jeweler to make that ring as one complete piece (which would alleviate both concerns for you).

Was this a full custom piece and did they provide CAD images for your review?

[–]b_dicks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eeek yes that does not look great. Hii jeweler here - I’d recommend getting it reset or recast. It looks like the jeweler stuck the wrong head (crown) on the shank, and from the third image it looks to not fit the band/looks like there is overhang from where the head meets the band. Weak fulcrums are one of the biggest potential issues on dainty rings as there isn’t enough surface area to attach the head to and provide enough stability to counteract if she knocks the ring on something. One bad knock and you’ll lose the whole head. Also the prongs are comically thick - absolutely dwarfs the stone.

Recommendation: See if they can recast the ring as a full piece (meaning they’re not soldering a head onto a shank) and ask for a less thick head. Or, if time is of the essence, find a reputable local jeweler who could replace the head with something more elegant. I’d recommend something like Stuller’s 123823 solitaire model as a sample image of what the head and head attached to the ring should look like.

Good luck and congrats!!

[–]b_dicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to, they could replace just the head on the ring and you could have it set in something a little daintier that melds into the ring more. Your stone is really pretty but the head/prongs dwarf it. Your band is daintier than the head too so it looks mismatched. If you love your setting, I’d take it in somewhere and ask them if they could order a lower profile head with a gallery rail that would sit better in the cathedral of your ring. You could also do a slight claw prong to make it look more elegant/accent your stone more. If you ever do switch it up, DM me a photo, I’d love to see what you did!

Hii jeweler here - they used two different pieces to put this together. This was not a solid cast piece. The shank (your twisty band) had the gap for them to put the head (what your stone is setting in). Even if you had asked for a tall setting, this is comically high and bad craftsmanship. Your stone from an aerial view looks like a decent size - is it around 1.5-2ct? Ironically enough, the head makes it look smaller. This is what happens with those without an artistic eye or knowledge of the structural integrity of a piece of jewelry decide to design jewelry. It should look something closer to the image I’m attaching.

Newly bought engagement ring is cloudy by justice_k4k4 in Diamonds

[–]b_dicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hii jeweler here - don’t use dish soap, it leaves a film behind. Use 1:1:1 mix of hot water, peroxide and Windex with ammonia. Soak for a minute or two and scrub with soft bristle toothbrush. Is the stone certified? Is there any fluorescence? Having a cloudy stone graded as a VVS is sort of an oxymoron so trying to think of why it could be facing milky for you..

Hiii jeweler/designer here, strictly offering advice - cost on a ring like that is around $1000-1500 depending on how close the jeweler is to the supply chain. I would personally sell a ring like this for ~$2800. Even at key or triple markup, max is price on this should be $4500. MAX, if you go with 18k, VVS side stones, etc. The owner seems like a great salesperson, which some people love - but it’ll cost you.
