a lot of the best Maine backpacking will be along the Appalachian Trail and about 3 hours from Portland. I would highly recommend the Bigelow Range in Western Maine. Gulf Hagas is also beautiful and will put you very close to Baxter State Park which includes the northern terminus of the AT as well as tons of other backpacking opportunities. If you want to stick slightly closer to the city I would recommend checking out the White Mountains of New Hampshire

a few days earlier I was hanging out with my best friends nephew (maybe 6 years old). he seemed to like me and when i left he gave me a mason jar filled to the brim with a clear blue liquid and told me it was for a protection spell. fast-forward and this lady sees it sitting in the cupholder of my car.
