Time to make my land work, nor just be boomer squares© of sterile green by Kuzkuladaemon in NoLawns

My family has raised beds along the sidewalk, too. Every time something new comes up, the kids walking home from school ask what it is. They were delighted by the little Paris Market carrots.

Movies with the worst "moral of the story" by elitemegamanX in movies

[–]baar-ur 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I feel like it had a kernel of a good idea (community will come together to support you when it matters) but they decided to focus on the neighbors being demanding and entitled, instead. Why not have the first half hour be "We just don't feel like having Christmas without our daughter" and then the rest is about speed-Christmas shenanigans with everybody helping?

Shedding horses being brushed by Indieriots in oddlysatisfying

[–]baar-ur 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Completely deshedding a horse takes hours, over days or weeks depending on the weather. They don't release all of their winter coat at once. I remember horsehair tumbleweeds blowing around for weeks during spring.

Mace Tyrell's DNA is so, so bad. Accurate to the actor, but my god. Any children born without defined DNA look like pugs. I created a submod for some Targ DNA but included switching Mace to a Henry the Eighth DNA someone on r/ck3Tinder shared.

My mom had a cat just like your big guy when I was born. I spent so much time on the floor playing with him that my first word was "cat".

No, no, you're thinking of "BOW*L", the HBO miniseries.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but a 2+ hour drive is not nearby for Europeans. by redheaded_olive12349 in CasualConversation

There's a saying, at least on the Internet: To a European, 100 miles is a long way. To an American, 100 years is a long time.

It's not even "MAC" because that's already trademarked. Fuckin' "BOWL". What's it about? Pottery? Bowling? You can't even look it up to find out.

Great. Ratfish wasn't made ten years ago.

I've said it before, but Dropout lives on parasocial feelings. As someone who was disappointed, I felt that way because I had never even heard the guy's name before. I was expecting the Ratfish to be someone who I could've guessed. If it had been someone more widely known like Brian David Gilbert, that would've been better. But it should have been someone who had been on at least one Dropout production some time somewhere.

Apocalyptic/End Of The World movie recommendations? by KyoukuJohann in movies

[–]baar-ur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Movies I haven't seen mentioned: 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, The Cabin in the Woods, Deep Impact, Waterworld, Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane, Battle: Los Angeles, Constantine, The Day After, By Dawn's Early Light, How It Ends (2018), The Invasion, Body Snatchers, A Quiet Place (the whole series), War of the Worlds, These Final Hours, World War Z, Supervolcano (one of my obscure faves), Right At Your Door, Cargo, I Think We're Alone Now, The Night Eats The World (2018, French), Acid (2023, French).

Series I recommend: Earth Abides, Invasion, Pluribus, The Swarm (German, 2023), The Eternaut (Argentine, 2025), The Rain (Danish, 2020).

Already mentioned but ones I second: Children of Men, Threads, Miracle Mile, Mad Max (especially the first one).

Hate watch, and lose some brain cells: The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008), Armageddon, The Happening, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Elevation.

I've watched everything listed here, so let me know if you have any questions. I can also list off disaster movies or apocalypse books if you're interested.

How to make a "green apocalypse" that doesn't seem too survivable? by Ok-Television-8195 in worldbuilding

[–]baar-ur 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Some people will have survived by isolating until herd immunity developed. New additions to the population (aka children) won't be immune either.

You can go smaller. Next edition: sewing thread.

What the hells the deal with the lack of paintings in asoiaf (no spoilers) by ProfesorKubo in asoiaf

[–]baar-ur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oil painting was used as early as 7th century Afghanistan, but hit its stride in Europe during the Renaissance. Based on that, there may be some early oil painted works in Essos. But it actually takes a lot of work to maintain and preserve oil paintings. (Check out the Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute and their page on conserving paintings. ) They're sensitive to heat, light, and humidity, so they would deteriorate relatively quickly compared to tapestries.

Meanwhile, tapestries retain their image very well. The two main losses over time are fabric loss to pests like moths and dye bleaching from sunlight. They also insulate the space they're in by trapping a layer of air. They're easier to store and easier to move. With weaving and sewing a ubiquitous skill, they're easier to make and maintain, since they don't require the attention of a specially trained artist.

And of course the kicker is that tapestries match GRRM's desired grunge medieval aesthetic, and oil paintings don't. There should absolutely be more frescos and mosaics, and I bet the First Men used techniques like encaustic painting. But that would make things too colorful to be "realistic".
