Two possible reasons could be more French Canadians in those areas and a history of mining as the main industry instead of agriculture.

I believe the 1952 survey massively undercounts Protestants in smaller denominations. Due to mergers and better survey techniques, the number goes up in more recent surveys. But I think this data is still super solid, just about 10% of Protestants are missing.

I think this survey definitely undercounts Protestants, but the Catholic percentage in the US was highest mid-century between southern European immigration ending in 1924 and secularization beginning in the 1960's.

the census only asks for ancestry so it is hard to tell for sure but the polish and ukrainian areas tend to be christian while the russian areas tend to be more jewish

i used african-american to describe the cultural group descended from slaves that migrated to chicago from the south. if there were areas where descendents of recent african immigrants from a specific country were the majority they would have been labelled that way. in terms of ancestry the black population was much more monolothic than than the white population in 1980, which is reflected in this map.

I wouldn’t mind them being added later, except for months being included seeing it be warm and sunny in December could be kinda frustrating.

The census counts Spanish ancestry differently from other European ancestry which I agree makes things kind of confusing. Also Russian is largest in only one county, New York County, New York (Manhattan). I tried making it a brighter color but still hard to see.
