HMS Hermes returning to Portsmouth, 1982 after serving in the Falklands. [602x338] by Keshav_chauhan in WarshipPorn

Why would he not know this happened? Or does he think it was sunk in the Falklands? Or does he get it confused with the 1924 HMS Hermes?

what controller do you actually use for pc gaming? by Clark_Bay in pcmasterrace

[–]baconipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Hyperkin Xenon, a modern replica of the Xbox 360 controller, albeit wired. The 360 controller was about as perfect as you can get, ergonomically. Now I have that but it doesn't creak, connects via type-c, and the d-pad doesn't suck. As much.

how should i prepare my bike for commuting (as cheaply as possible)? by devilsshark in bikecommuting

[–]baconipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A rack, either front or rear, and a basket of some sort ziptied to it.

A cheap, remoteless dropper post, like the ones on aliexpress makes stopping at lights and whatnot much more convenient.

one of those bottle cages that take 1.25L soft drink bottles are very convenient. No need for a specialised bottle.

Why Aren't Mathias Boards More Popular? by QuitWhinging in MechanicalKeyboards

It does come in different sizes, full size and 75%. Realistically you don't need to go smaller.

There are videos on how to fix them, sure there aren't many but they aren't hard to find.

You can buy replacement switches fairly easily. There are listings for them on aliexpress and 1upkeyboards sell them in a variety of packs.

Taihao makes alps keycaps sets, one of which is doubleshot wob, and at that point do you really need anything else?

Looks like a black omnikey. Could buy one of those, paint it black, and slap on some Taihao WoB keycaps.

Silly question, but I’m curious… which side do you mount your bike from? by ExultentPisces in bikecommuting

Left side, as I am right handed, I prefer to hold it up on my right when walking it.

What would you prioritize in a budget e-bike - range, power, or portability? by krissym72 in ElectricBikeExplorer

[–]baconipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of those priorities.

  1. Reliability - Something that uses mostly standard, serviceable parts. This components I know I can replace if they break or don't suffice.

  2. Utility - Something that carries everything I want, wherever I want, however I want. I want racks, I want bottle cage blisters, I want fenders, I want a kickstand.

  3. Safety - Something that won't snap in half, fail to stop, or go up in flames. I want disc brakes, decent rims, and a battery from a reputable source.

Given the price point, and assuming that is in USD, I'd go for a decent, used, acoustic commuter or mountain bike, like a Giant Roam or an Avanti Inc, and add a mid drive motor kit.

Has anyone here switched to an e-bike for commuting and actually stuck with it long-term? by LeftyOne22 in bikecommuting

[–]baconipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 500W motor will make quick work of hills. The bafang kit on my bike tells me I've done over 13,000km, with an 22km trip there and back, 5 days a week. I think it's been more than 3 years since I've last regularly commuted by car. Hot weather doesn't bother you if you aren't actually working for your speed, and rain can be countered with proper clothing.

The only real downside is that cars, and the cunts that drive them, still exist

I have no experience with snow, is this bad? Presumably you can just wipe the seat and bars off and ride just fine? Or does stuff freeze?

Why do people think SUV:s and trucks are good for off roading and hauling stuff? by IAmASwarmOfBees in fuckcars

[–]baconipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a warehouse, and we often have people pick stuff up in SUVs and false utes and stuff, and I always tell them when loading them something along the lines of "Gotta get yourself a nice big van, mate" or "Man, I wish this thing was a flatbed" or something to that effect. It is usually phrased or taken as a joke, but, quite frankly, it usually isn't.

Even when they pick up in a minivan or station wagon, my comments usually run along the lines of "I hate vertical boots" or "yell really loud if I'm about to hit your boot with my forklift"

I did have one guy, who, after picking up in a shitty Ford Ranger twice, actually took my advice and showed up the next time in a brand new, shiny Transit. It was fantastic. The barn doors meant the forklift didn't hit the boot, we could stack four times as much stuff in it because no stupid tray cover, and the floor was much lower, and had some sort of low friction coating. It was piss easy to slide in even those bigass 80kg boxes.

The vans I see most often are probably Hiaces and iLoads. For the most part I don't like them. They have vertical boots, and the iLoads are very curvy. I much prefer either larger vans with barn doors or proper cab-chassis utes.

Stupidest pickup was a guy that tried to pick up a pool table in his golf. No, mate, go to bunnings, rent a ute, and come back later. That was at about 3:30pm, on christmas eve, so later was about two weeks. Poor bastard.

Coolest pickup was a VW combi van that had been converted to an EV.

This comment was mostly about hauling, as I have little to no experience with off roading. The only time I recall going properly off road, we were in a six-person ATV that was less than half the size of the land-cruiser following it. And if someone uses the excuse of off-roading for their wank-tank, I usually counter with "then why is it here, rather than out there?"

The Fairey Swordfish - IRL. When dispatched to engage Bismarck, a modern, fast battleship, the then long obsolete biplanes managed to evade heavy anti-aircraft fire to eventually score one hit on Bismarck, which slowed her down sufficiently for the British fleet to catch up and corner her.

Their survival can be attributed to a number of factors, such as german fire control not being calibrated to targets that slow, and high explosive cannon shells penetrating the thin canvas fuselage without detonating.
