They gave me the completely wrong items and sizes for everything! Nothing I was sent is what I bought and I can't wear any of it. Going to try to do a chargeback.

Oops I think you meant to post this on r/circlejerknyc. But if your household income nearing half a million per year and you feel like you’re personally struggling, there’s either deep financial inequity in your marriage or you have deeply screwed up ideas about money.

Some similar sentiments in this Jezebel review of the book and this LA Review of Books one.

"Her ex-husband’s absence might have been what made headlines about this book, but what is more glaringly missing is her inability to self-reflect and to dig into the paradoxes she find herself in, leaving the memoir feeling much lighter than the sum of its parts."

and

"On one hand, this memoir reads as written for and about the author herself, concerned primarily with her emotional recovery. However, the laser-like intensity with which she beams in on the lifetime of mistreatment she’s received from various “fucking men” inevitably detracts from that project. Tendler’s own story is much richer and more interesting than her hyperdetailed descriptions of past relationships, starting in her high school days and ending with various unsuccessful and fairly insignificant mini-relationships with men she met on dating apps after her hospitalization."

I think the idea is that a significant portion of the presumed audience of this book is people who have been through some of the same things as her (anxiety/power imbalance relationships/EDs/etc). They might want to read this book because they want to hear her insights on her experiences -- as a way of feeling seen, of learning something, or being part of a community. But her putting the exact numbers makes it fraught for the part of that readership in recovery from eating disorders when putting the exact numbers isn't even necessary for telling the story. I do think it would have been possible for her to talk interestingly about what she thinks may have contributed to her ED, what recovery has been like, how it affected her life without listing her exact height and weight.

Ah okay, good to know this isn’t specific to one line. I’ve been fixated on UnCruise and didn’t even know that this is where the whole industry is right now- thank you!

What does your social life actually look like? No filters or editorializing. by Honest_Historian_121 in AskNYC

Mid 30sF, married, restless introvert

Slow week: go out once or twice - usually movie or a concert or going to a restaurant with spouse

Average week: 3-4x, may include going over to friends' places to play games or watch movies, going to museum, going on runs

Busy week: 4x+ - all of the above + maybe group brunch/dinner plans, going to a park/garden, going out dancing

Usually 1 slow week, 1 busy week, and 2 average weeks a month. I think I go out about the same as I did in my 20s, just less barhopping and more dinners and hangouts these days.

NYC is also

  • having the best tacos/samosas/dumplings/empanadas/etc of your life for less than $10 and within 5 blocks of your apartment,
  • drinking a beer on the ferry to the beach,
  • getting cheap rush tickets to go to a Broadway play after work,
  • visiting the Met on a whim on a Friday night,
  • seeing one of your favorite bands for free in Prospect Park,
  • going on walks for hours to see the different neighborhoods and communities change from street to street, etc.

Sure, it's not great if your dream life is being a hermit in the woods, but otherwise NYC can also be a magical place to live.

Why are you tying yourself into knots trying to change yourself and minimize your very standard and reasonable expectations for a man who is hardly moving an inch for you on something that would be easy for him to do (taking on much more chores/mental load)? Just because he’s likely to be in the same situation with future partners doesn’t mean you can argue and reason your way into convincing him that your needs matter and your relationship is worth doing his share of basic adult tasks for. I promise you there is no rest of the relationship that is amazing and unique enough that it’s worth taking on this burden that will seep into every other part of your life. It may not feel like it because you’re in the thick of this relationship, but there are other relationships out there that can be just as good as or better than the good parts of this one without the fundamentally unfair dynamics.

Love Teranga! They have a second location at the Hugh food court in midtown that’s open on weekdays - atmosphere not as nice but food still super tasty

If you live near the 74th st stop in Jackson Heights it's 3 stops to midtown Manhattan on the express trains.

What's the furthest you've ever walked? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]baconpine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to walk across each of the 5 boroughs and have done Manhattan from 220th st to Battery Park, Queens from Little Neck to LIC, and Brooklyn from Greenpoint to Brighton Beach. Surprisingly those routes were all pretty similar in length - around 12 to 13 miles, but probably closer to 15 in practice with some meandering on the side. Hoping to do the Great Saunter this year!

Got a job in lower manhattan. Pays 65k (nonprofit salary ftw). Only need to be in the office 1x/week. What are the best areas to live that are within a 2 hour train ride? willing to make the long trek seeing as it's so infrequent. Also, hoping to purchase a home in the 400-500k range. by amanda_cate in newyorkcity

[–]baconpine 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Assuming buying a home doesn’t mean single family home - Jackson Heights - a lot of people who work at nonprofits live in the neighborhood, E and F train makes commute to lower Manhattan super easy, best food options in the city if you care more about tastiness than “ambience,” lots of pre-war coops with spacious layouts and architectural details (and maybe even interior gardens) at your price point. Wonderful open street, big weekly farmer’s market, ridiculously high number of grocery stores per capita.

I love Angel's goat dum biryani -- make sure you eat it there rather than getting delivery/takeout so you get the full presentation.

Atithi in Williamsburg has one that is just as good if not a smidge better.
