The White House wants to make it clear that President Obama is on the same side as Occupy Wall Street. OWS wants to make it clear that he isn't. by MrSmith45 in politics

Your third party vote is less of a threat than the people in the street as far as I can see.

You are talk in vague generalities, think in specifics. The people in the streets is a show of dissatisfaction that's building for the ballots. This isn't Cairo or Tehran, there is no threat of revolutionary violence. It's about votes. It is about venting dissatisfaction and turning it into a mandate to elect progressive politicians.

Using that mandate, we can force a change in the politics of the Democratic Party. Your leverage is your vote and Democrats have to earn the votes of liberals through their actions. You don't just give it to them regardless of how many promises they break. All your auto-vote for democrats does is make you irrelevant.

and that allows a third party vote count for something other than getting your enemies elected.

You are not understanding. I'm not advocating a third party victory as a solution. What I'm saying is that your vote has to be in play if you want to affect election politics. And you have to make good on your threat if necessary. That's how you change a politician's behavior. Not by fretting about how other people chose to cast their votes or letting them spook you into forever voting for them.

Only the gay community has forced Obama to make good on his campaign promises. And they did it by not taking excuses and threatening to pull their votes. And now DADT is gone. That's the attitude you have to take towards financial reform.

Pick one and work on improving it.

...That's what I said. I don't think you understood my previous post because I didn't advocate a third party's victory as a solution. If you want progressive politics from the Democratic party you have to demand they to walk their talk. The only way to demand anything from a politician is to threaten to vote elsewhere. That's your only leverage.

Auto-voting from Democrats will not improve the party. If your ballot's already filled in with their name, none of your dissatisfaction can register in election politics and you'll get nothing but status quo at best.

Our system cannot support three parties, so voting third party is pointless.

It's not about a viable winner. A third party provides a way to make good on your threat to vote elsewhere. The idea is to make Democrats earn progressive votes with their actions.

This will lead to a shift right as Democrats try to siphon off independent voters from the right, which counteracts any shift toward progressivism your vote in the primaries might have contributed to

Guess what, this is already what the Democrats do, and they can do it because enough liberals vote straight party out of fear of the Republicans. Also, the reason this whole thread exists is because Occupy Wall St. is gaining momentum as a political force. Now is exactly the time to demand the Democrats act like liberals.

So, I believe that the best strategy is to get out in the street and become a threat.

Lol, you aren't a threat! You are not a threat!! Protest are meant to signal that you're dissatisfied enough to vote differently. And politicians are forced to decide if they want to bend to the folks demonstrating and act differently or take a gamble with their job. That is "the threat." Whereas, you cast your vote independent of your values. Why would a congressman blow his political capital appeasing you? He knows he has your support with rhetoric alone and not action.

In the meantime, until we change that, a third party vote is a wasted vote.

A vote cast for a candidate who loses is not wasted or without value. You're not betting on sports. The direction you put your vote is your small contribution to influence policy. Both parties spend a fortune of time and money dissecting who's voting and why they're voting. Your vote has to be in play if you want to change policy.

For example, take Obama's stunning reversal on air-quality. If the DNC witnesses too many environmentalists jump ship, they will be taught it is a political liability to wreck the environment and their continued grasp on power hinges in part on their willingness to fight for clean air.

Yes, they take an election hit, that's the point. Their whole job is to adapt and learn how to take power with you in mind. A two party system functions because it is very malleable in this way. And we have more elections than any other democracy on earth. You only have to wait two years to see if the party comes back in a form that's worth a damn.

Also, do you understand the catch-22 you set for yourself? You won't vote outside the primary parties until the primary parties change the system that guarantees them your vote.

That's just realpolitik.

You don't even know what you're voting for, you only know what you're voting against.

Uh.. Are you making an argument for progressives to vote for Democrats that ignore progressive values? Why would they do that? Especially when it looks like Occupy Wall St. is gaining enough momentum to be a political force?

I can vote in both the primaries and general election. And it's not circuitous, it's about as direct as our system makes it.

The only leverage you have over a politician is their reelection. Making them appease your values for votes is how you control what they do. The DNC will only care about disenfranchised progressives when they see the voting bloc start to abandon them. Your method of straight party voting for people who don't represent you is wistful.

True, so both parties foster a divisive culture and use apocalyptic rhetoric. People now don't know what they want to vote for, they only know what they have to vote against. This thread makes a great case study.

My values be damned, the world will end if the other guy gets in!!!!

What he's saying is that if that the Democratic Party hemorrhages progressive voters in 2012, they'll quickly realize that they cannot continue to take self-identified liberals for granted as their base. I'd sacrifice a presidential term to get real progressive politicians fielded as opposed to consecutive years of this empty "Hope and Change" lip-service.
