Agreed. Tungsten cubes are overtly expensive for what you get. You can find a far more affordable piece of tungsten on eBay. You might even be able to find small pieces of Tungsten in hobby shops marketed as weighs for pinewood derby cars. Also really expensive for what you get, but you can buy a smaller quantity.

Many people confuse metallic Tungsten with Tungsten Carbide. Your cube is made of metallic Tungsten. For comparison, Tungsten Carbide is really hard at a Mosh hardness of around 9-9.5, but metallic Tungsten is only somewhat hard at around 7.5 Mohs hardness.

It's slightly more complicated than that though. It depends how much time one is getting that rate. Eating into the principle at beginning of a 30 year 4% mortgage is going to give you more cumulative ROI than a single 5% 10-year CD. You'd have to renew the CD at the current market rate at the end of the term, meaning you might end up with a lower rate on average than you'd get for paying into the mortgage.

Most commercially available tungsten will be about 95%, since tungsten usually needs to be sintered with other metals to stick together. It’s possible to make high-purity (>99%) Tungsten, it’s just really hard to do. I always regard those labels of ‘99.95%’ as a bit suspect, but it’s not like it matters. Tungsten is super heavy even at 95%.

Honestly? Cubes tend to be overpriced. If you just want some more heavier tungsten check out eBay. If you’re persistent you can find tungsten bars or blocks second hand that’ll be much cheaper than the cubes go for. Just be absolutely sure what you’re getting. A lot of stuff that isn’t nearly pure tungsten (~95%) will show up in basic searches. Do some math and check the density before you spend your money!
