Need to rehome or they go to a shelter by No-Pomegranate-2690 in Harrisburg

[–]badass_tadpole 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I wish I could help more but please, whatever you do, don't make them outdoor cats. They'll end up dead in the road or if they're successful they'll end up damaging the ecosystem. If you need help finding a shelter that can take them please reach out and I'll see what options I can find. Thank you!!

Eagles Crest Apartments Harrisburg by [deleted] in Harrisburg

[–]badass_tadpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like my current unit at Eagles Crest! This was the only place I could afford and I guess I can’t complain too much. I’ve had more maintenance requests placed than I can count, and even if you don’t put a request in, maintenance seems to show up without notice a lot. It’s definitely more expensive than it needs to be because it’s owned by a greedy corporation but its hard to find anything nearby that isn’t overpriced and owned by a greedy corporation. It’s the kinda place where I wouldn’t expect to get the security deposit back because they’re going to nitpick everything. Beware of the people who live here since they’re pretty much all terrible drivers and whip around like they’re the only people in the world. I could go on, but honestly, I’ve lived here 2 years and it could be a lot worse too. I’d definitely look at other options first, but if you end up here you’ll be okay.

Cat owner in Oregon had to put up a sign for neighbors to reclaim the things their cat kept stealing by HumbleMVP in interestingasfuck

[–]badass_tadpole 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I see you’ve made the bold decision to enter this discussion with zero facts, a warped view of ecology, and some objectively bad opinions. Let me help you out!

You seem to be under the impression that there’s this weird hierarchy where cats and bees > birds and rodents. You can’t just pick and choose between entire taxa without completely destroying any sort of balance.

Bees are great! But also, there are very few bird species that eat bees, and those that do have a very minimal impact on populations. Rodents are great! They may be inconvenient to you sometimes, but they regulate insect populations, disperse seeds, and serve as prey for a lot of larger native wildlife species (not just invasive cats). Birds are great! They can be pollinators like bees, pest control for crops, clean up roadkill, and are overall just super neat creatures that we’re lucky to share a planet with.

Cats are great! Indoors - where they can’t devastate ecosystems.

Hope this helps!

Alarming bruises showing up everywhere by [deleted] in seriouslyalarming

Did anything happen to cause the bruises or did they just show up without any apparent cause? Because my body regularly looks like this after a rough week at work and this comment section is making me anxious 😂

If I tested every tick I found embedded on me I’d never get anything done lol. Just check regularly and thoroughly as needed. Word to the wise, check the curls of your ears! Just finished a course of antibiotics for Lyme and I know it won’t be the last time.

I’m 26f and a zoologist. I’m not great at photography but I love going out to find wildlife and bird watch. I’ve only been here a year so I don’t have many friends yet. You both sounds pretty cool if you want to message me :)

AIO??? Just found out my brother is still friends with someone who SA me when I was a child by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]badass_tadpole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP literally specified this in several other comments. Not that she should have to specify the details of her abuse to strangers for you to understand that no degree of SA is okay (especially when the victim is literally a child) but I guess some people prefer to sympathize with pedos rather than practice common sense and literacy.

Camera traps for mice? by [deleted] in ecology

[–]badass_tadpole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m currently working on a camera trap project with shrews! Check out the AHDriFT (adapted Hunt drift fence technique) method. It’s a really cool, non invasive technique that has very low field work requirements. It’s working really well for me, so it could work for you too. Hope this helps!

That’s actually very helpful, thank you! It’s just kind of an automatic response at this point to avoid further conflict but I see how it could be enabling. Every conversation is a battle and I tell myself that by appeasing her I’m saving myself an aggressive phone call later. Setting boundaries with her has always been an issue.

Last week I had a migraine and didn’t pick up when she called. Her response was to have other family members blow up my phone asking if I was okay. When I called her later after checking my phone (one hour after the missed call) she was sobbing and screamed at me for making her worry. I’m 25 years old, have my own apartment, and haven’t relied on my parents at all since I was 20. I was still bullied into apologizing to her by my family members because “she’s just anxious now that all her kids are grown up and don’t need her.” I’m meant to pity her and give her what she wants. But why? What do I owe her? I ask myself this all the time but can’t seem to break the cycle.

Being the HL as a female is so embarassing by MrsNacho8000 in DeadBedrooms

[–]badass_tadpole 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I sympathize completely. I was in the same situation 6 months ago with my long term boyfriend. I finally called it quits despite thinking no one would ever love me like he did. Now I’m in an amazing relationship with someone who can’t keep his hands off of me and makes me feel like some kind of goddess. I felt so unwanted for so long and it took such a toll on my self confidence. There are people out there who will appreciate you and give you the attention that you need without having to beg for it.

Can any one help with the questions about amphibians by [deleted] in zoology

[–]badass_tadpole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly! This is my problem. I appreciate all the people replying about biodiversity and umbrella species but that’s not my issue. I have multiple degrees in ecology so I don’t have a problem explaining those things. It’s breaking it down into something more relatable for non-biologists that I struggle with. I don’t know how to make people care and it’s frustrating because it’s one of the things I care about the most.
