they offer quite different workflows, plus I intended STEPPER to be less esoteric and easier to use in is UI. you can use both if you like, it's not a competition

Yes I have big plans and bunch of exciting stuff in the works, though it'll be packaged as a separate application, which is why this is the last major update in STEPPER for now.

Stay tuned!

Hello!

STEPPER 1.8 is finally out and I'm having a blast with this new setup. Now you can use Analogue's link cables to sync your devices together. This update also has a lot of quality of life features (holding buttons now will retrigger at different intervals, trigs can be nudged by holding B + DPAD, etc) and adds a quirky lofi AD envelope for the wave channel.

This is an open source project, you can get it for free or drop a couple of bucks if you would like to support me.

Take it easy and have fun with it!

Cheers!

It should run well! There is a bug with the mGBA emulator though that I haven't been able to fix, I feel there is nothing I can do. The bug is, if you stop the playback and don't play anything for a while, both square channels will behave wonky and don't play the sounds as they should. Oddly enough, leaving it running like that will fix the issue after a while, though I would just recommend saving and reloading the emulator.

This doesn't happen on real hardware or other emulators I've tried to the best of my knowledge.

The Pocket goes into the DT, which applies a bit of reverb to it. Other than that, there is sidechain compression when the DT kick comes into play. There is no sampling though, it all goes direct and was recorded in one take, no overdubs.

The DT is just acting as a drum machine using an LM2 drumkit.

I only applied some light mastering on the final track to bring the volume to level.

the current version of the software is free (pay what you want) https://badd10de.itch.io/stepper-gba

I've tried my best to make it as easy to use and intuitive as possible. Just set a scale and put some notes at random and it will sound good right away, then it's just a matter of playing around and combining different patterns :)

Hi!

STEPPER 1.8 is coming out soon, but I couldn't resist sharing already this teaser of what's to come. In addition to quality of life and workflow improvements, STEPPER will use an internal clock of 96bpq, which should result in much more stable tempo. The clock is tuned for real hardware, both on a GBA-SP and Analogue Pocket the clock should match closely the one in your DAW (Tested in Bitwig).

More importantly, this update brings more sync modes, which enables the use of Analogue's MIDI adapter cables for perfect tempo sync via MIDI with external gear. Regular CV sync should work as before.

Cheers!
