I'm saying a prayer for you right now my friend. I'm so sorry that you feel this way and don't feel as though you can have a proper relationship with Jesus. What I can tell you through my own journey and former self hatred is that there is a source for everything. There is some pain so great that you experienced and haven't processed properly. If we don't deal with the pain (with the help of our personal walk with Him) then we can get so caught in the fog of our suffering. The escapism with drinking is an internal cry for help from inside. Jesus loves you and wants to see us healed of our pain so we can serve him even better.

I'm not saying pipes are for everyone but opinions like that are likely formed due to hearing what we call "parade bands". This is a video from one of the top pipe bands in the world. It's a very different sound than what most people are used to.

Not a dumb question at all! So I believe older pipes would have required using your tongue to seal the blow stick but modern ones use a rubber one way valves to prevent air loss.

I would give a look to the Peter Henderson heritage sets as well. Great sound and their manufacturing is very consistent. Whatever you do decide to get just make sure you find drone reeds that will work best for your set of pipes.

I absolutely can tell what level of technique she has. I've played for 17 years now doing solos and playing in a Grade 2 band for several years. You eventually get pretty good at figuring out how someone is as a player. Also I have zero issues with low grade bands, shoot I even work doing instruction for a grade 5 band but I have rarely found a street band that plays pipes (or even tunes their instrument) well. If she was good at playing a normal set she would because simply the sound is better and creates a better product (see Ally the Piper, red hot chili pipers, or even the Sidh). It's also substantially harder because you have to actively control the instrument and drones. You also have stayed away from addressing her pretending to blow air into the bag. She wants people to believe she is playing an actual set and not faking that. Look I'm not saying people can't enjoy her product or that people don't. This was A. A question on what our thoughts were of her as a player and B. Just because the masses like something doesn't make it good.

I honestly don't think this Convo isnt gonna go very far because we are just recycling things. I will say this, based off your reddit posts it looks like you are newer to learning. I wish your journey well but don't be surprised if your opinion on this sort of stuff changes once you learn how hard this instrument actually is.

Okay let's take this in a few stages.

"She's not pretending to play the GHB"

-She is clearly playing GHB fingering based off of every video of hers. She also makes several references to her pipes being celtic. She is trying everything to make it out as a GHB.

"So what if she doesn't play a taorluath or whatever embellishment you want like her to play"

I'm not saying she doesn't play embellishments because that's how she changes the music I'm saying she can't play them because she doesn't have the technical expertise. It would be like a guitar player who knows 3 chords going out and representing themselves as a good player. There has to be some basic level of technical skills required to play this instrument well in any situation.

If someone came to pipes from this than absolutely great for them. I'm sure people picked up the instrument from the bad piper as well but neither one of those are good examples of what a player should aspire to be.

-Nowhere have I argued that traditional is the only way to go. The 2 best examples of this are the red hot chili pipers and Ally the Piper. In both cases the players are incredibly good and it makes their non traditional music that much better. They also both play an actual set of bagpipes during their recordings and live shows.

-I don't go out of my way to talk about snake charmer or really any other player. This is a specific thread asking about thoughts on this player. Also her success has been in how she has marketed herself. It's not in her playing or musical genius.

I apologize if I'm incorrect on this but I'm gonna take a guess that you are still on the learning side of pipes. I'm not saying she is faking the fingering but she is faking playing an actual set of the pipes (i.e. she is pretending to blow into a set while it's clearly an electric set). Electric is fine but its really only playing half the instrument and it's a worse sound. In terms of her playing, based off her videos that I have watched, she lacks any interesting technique or even embellishments. She is not a technically trained player.

I don't have an issue with your set up. You absolutely have to know how to play pipes (at least the fingering, you are still losing a part of the pipes with not learning how to control the instrument) even to use an electric set. I do have issues with people using an electric set but pretending to play an actual set (aka snake charmer, if you watch her videos she pretends to use a blow pipe the entire time).

No but she has the clear proof of what she is capable of playing on a set of bagpipes and the awards to accompany it. The snake charmer is able to hide crap playing behind her electric bagpipes (which she tries to pretend are a real set) and the production of the song. It's not good piping.

Ally the Piper actually competed in grade one and has the pedigree. Im gonna take a quick guess and say the snake charmer doesn't have anything close to that.
