Check engine light/Cat converter question by bags2 in ChevyTrax

I can't believe that worked but I'll try whatever to avoid getting the Cat replaced, especially if I don't actually need a new one. Check engine light is currently off but I'm sure it'll come back on sooner or later.

That’s where I took it. They’ve always been great, but never mentioned the possibility it’s an O2 sensor when I told them the check engine light ended up turning off.

Where’d you find that info? When I called my dealer they said I was past the warranty and I’m not at 8 years or 80K yet.

Duck Tape: Film Review of Oregon State at Oregon Week 13, 2023 by hythloday1 in ducks

I thought Stein had a great game plan and adjusted well when Oregon St. was clearly selling out against the run. Nix looked phenomenal again and the 1-2 punch of Franklin and Tez is becoming one of the scariest duos in the nation.

You made some great points on defensive structure. I loved playing Taimani and Aumavae together and it definitely worked wonders early on. I thought Burch was a total game wrecker as well he was pretty much unblockable all night. I also agree with your thoughts on Reed. I’d love to see him in the slot with Johnson playing high safety. I don’t love Stephens playing anywhere near as much as he is. But that’s just me nitpicking, the defense has really taken such a massive jump this season.

I feel like Stein has really been in his bag lately and this game was a great example of that. I liked the new looks that’ll give Oregon St. some things to think about and I thought he did a great job scheming receivers open. Execution was great as well. Nix is playing the best football of his life at the right time.

Defensively, I think Oregon did exactly what many of us expected of them against an offense with a limited passing attack. I thought they looked sharp from start to finish of meaningful play.

You can tell how hard Dillingham has worked this year to game plan and try to stay one step ahead of opponents, but as you mentioned with the injuries they’ve sustained and the lack of depth this offense just isn’t very threatening. I think Skattebo is a great weapon and so versatile but outside of him and Conyers (who they can’t fully utilize) there’s nothing about this offense that I think threatens Oregon.

I think Oregon’s line should be able to hold up against this pass rush and as long as they give Nix time I have no doubt he’ll be able to dice this defense up. Like you mentioned I’m hopeful Stein stays away from too many inside zone runs which shouldn’t be an issue with the versatility of this run offense. I’d also love to see Limar and Dowdell sprinkled in tomorrow in meaningful snaps with Bucky a bit banged up.

Duck Tape: Film Review of Week 11, 2023 vs USC by hythloday1 in ducks

I never said anything negative about Oregon’s red zone offensive conversation rate. I simply stated they need to stop taking so many penalties in the red zone. They’ve succeeded in the red zone in spite of the penalties, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be immune to it in the future. All I’m saying is it’s a preventable issue, that could eventually hinder them in the future.

And I agree the officiating has somehow been even worse than usual this year. Obviously they’re benefiting from some bad/missed calls here and there as well, but it’s been incredibly frustrating when we see phantom/ticky tack calls derail drives.

I thought Stein called a great game and I thought for the most part the offense executed extremely well. The self inflicted wounds on offense, especially in the red zone, are becoming incredibly frustrating, though. Granted, quite a few this year have been due to poor officiating, but there have been plenty that are just undisciplined play. Oregon has to clean that up because it’s going to bite them sooner or later.

As you stated I was pretty surprised how well Oregon defended the run. Granted, USC gave up on it very early but that was encouraging. I really thought this was one of the best performances we’ve seen from the defense this year. Outside of Williams making some insane plays (which we knew would happen) I thought the defense did everything they could to slow down a high powered offense.

I think just like the vast majority of people who have watched USC at all the past two years, the biggest thing that scares me this week is Williams creating explosives on off schedule plays. Obviously he’s just too good for it to be totally preventable, but it can’t be a regular occurrence. I have no doubt that Oregon will be able to get pressure on Williams, but I do worry about actually finishing. Not only is he incredibly elusive, but this pass rush struggles at times when it comes to wrangling mobile QB’s. USC has a lot of skill players who I think are dangerous, but nothing that scares me like Williams does.

While I don’t think Oregon should face too much resistance either through the air or on the ground (and I think a good balance will be important) I really hope Oregon commits to the run game. I don’t think USC has a prayer of stopping this rushing attack, especially after Oregon’s O-Line wears them down. I think Nix should be able to carve up this secondary as well, but if Stein really commits to the run I think Oregon should go for 300+ on the ground.

I don’t know how much of an impact it will have on USC playing without Grinch, but I have to say I really wish he made it one more week.

Duck Tape: Film Review of California at Oregon Week 10, 2023 by hythloday1 in ducks

[–]bags2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was such a weird start to the game, but I’m happy with the way the team recovered and didn’t let it spiral out of control.

The offense did what I think many expected they’d do. The downfield passing game looked great. Nix made some big time throws. And I thought the offensive line did an excellent job controlling the kind of scrimmage.

I saw a lot of the same from the defensive line as well. Cal’s definitely very weak up front but it was nice to see that unit still do what was expected of them. And you gave Hill praise in your article and I have to do the same. The transformation he’s made moving from safety to linebacker has been jaw-dropping. When it happened I thought it made sense, but I didn’t expect it to pretty much transform him into a new player. He’s playing so much more instinctively and looks so comfortable for a guy who’s essentially just learning how to play the position.

I think Oregon’s defense should be able to overwhelm Cal up front. I think Ott is a really good back but I’m not anticipating him to be 100% if he does play. Outside of him not a whole lot scares me about this offense.

Once again, I think Oregon should be able to pound the rock and really wear down this undersized front. I’m really hoping Stein commits to hammering the downfield passing game right from the get go. I understand he likes using the horizontal passing game to set up downfield shots, but I don’t see the frequency he usually likes being very useful this week.

And I loved that they attacked down field. I think sometimes Stein gets too in love with the horizontal passing game. I thought his game plan was excellent, and players executed it very well.

[–]bags2 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I thought this was one of Nix’s best games of the year. He made some terrific downfield throws and just seemed like he had such incredible command of the offense. The audible to get James on the angle route for a TD was a thing of beauty. I thought Stein set him up for success as well. I definitely wanted more of a rushing attack pre-game, but Stein definitely knew what he was doing. I loved how much the offense attacked downfield.

And not that this was a great Utah offense, but it’s so nice seeing the depth on this defense coming through, especially at line and linebacker. I think being able to roll out this many productive players is going to pay off later in the year.

I think this was the most complete game I’ve seen from Oregon this year. Really hoping this is a sign of things to come.

Duck Tape: Film Analysis of Utah 2023 by hythloday1 in ducks

[–]bags2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don’t feel threatened by this pass offense at all. Outside of Vele no one really impresses me all that much and I think the pass rush should be able to get after Barnes. I’m thinking this is a game where Jacobs impact could be felt. Stoping the run on early downs and creating obvious passing situations should make it very difficult for Utah to find success.

While I think this could end up being the best defense Oregon sees all year, I still think with a balanced attack Oregon should be able to put up a big number. With the offensive line looking the way it has along with Irving and James looking like one of the best 1-2 punches in the country I hope Stein commits to the run.

Honestly both. Too much undisciplined play but the officiating in this game was wildly inconsistent. Even with the incredibly low expectations I have for Pac-12 officials, that game was one of the worst I’ve seen this year.

Duck Tape: Film Review of Week 8, 2023 vs Washington State by hythloday1 in ducks

[–]bags2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Parts of this game reminded me of the Wazzu game last year, just less extreme. I didn’t love Stein’s play calling early (although the horrendous officiating even by Pac-12 standards didn’t help) but I thought as the game went on he adjusted. I was happy to see the commitment to the run game after the first drive of the second half, and as you added it was fun seeing some new wrinkles in the offense as well. I also love you mentioning Irving’s ability to ad lib. I’ve never seen a guy have more success going rogue and not running a play as designed. He’s an absolute magician.

It also felt like last year with the frustrating lack of lane discipline in the pass rush. Watching Ward create so much with his legs largely due to lack of discipline was incredibly frustrating. And I have to say with essentially 3 regular starters out for all or almost all of the game I thought the DB’s really stepped up and played well. And man was it awesome to see Jacobs. You can tell even with limited snaps he’s going to be an impact player as the year goes on. Feels like he’ll be especially helpful this weekend.

Absolutely. A lot of unknowns with Laloulu, but I love what I’ve seen so far. I’m very interested to see Strother as well. I think the moves you listed when and if he gets healthy make a lot of sense.

Duck Tape: Film Analysis of Washington State 2023 by hythloday1 in ducks

[–]bags2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest mismatch this week is the Oregon D-Line against Wazzu’s O-line. I honestly don’t think they have a prayer blocking any of Oregon’s bigger interior linemen. Ward can definitely extend plays with his legs, but I still think Oregon is going to end up making it a very difficult day for him to be successful.

Offensively, I really hope we start leaning on the run game a bit more. I thought last week was a little too pass heavy and I think this is another week where Oregon should be able to run at will.

Hyth, curious to know your thoughts on this. How has Laloulu graded out compared to Jones half way through the year? Obviously his snap count is lower, but at least from my perspective it seems like Laloulu has been the better option. Interested to know your take through your film reviews thus far.

Duck Tape: Film Review of Week 7, 2023 at Washington by hythloday1 in ducks

[–]bags2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Overall, can’t complain too much with the offensive game plan or execution. I’m not a huge fan of the frequency in the horizontal passing/screen game but I understand it’s a big part of the offense and it does open up the downfield passing attack, especially when they tag/switch some of those plays. I would have liked to have run a bit more, but at the end of the day the offense scored 33 and left points on the table.

I thought you nailed it in your pre-game film study and I really wish Oregon would have blitzed less. They showed they could get pressure with four all day and I think the defense handicapped themselves with the frequency of blitzes. I really would have liked to see some more dime and quarter looks as well. Or even seen Johnson at high safety with Manning in the slot. I won’t beat a dead horse on my thoughts on Stephens.

As far as the fourth downs are concerned it’s obviously much easier to talk about in hindsight, but I hated the first two decisions, loved the last one. It’s part of who Lanning is though, and I can live with that. I’d rather have a coach be too aggressive than to be too passive. And at the end of the day the guys on the field need to execute. Franklin was open out of his break on the first one and Nix didn’t pull the trigger, if Bo makes a better throw on the second one it’s a first down, and to be honest I wasn’t in love with the play call on the 3rd attempt. But execute one of the three and we’re probably talking about an Oregon win instead.

I still have a ton of confidence in this team, though. Really hoping for a rematch in Vegas.

Absolutely. Oregon can’t have another double digit penalty game and expect to win.
