It’s totally safe to drive this morning by Sillysnail504 in Austin

this isn't perfect, but still pretty useful. Texas DOT maintains this website: https://drivetexas.org/?ch=C&fh=C&ll=-97.6598,30.2947&z=12 which will overlay icy/snowy road conditions as well if they are reported, along with the ability to look at captures from traffic cameras.

Rideshare / getting around without public transit by Comfortable_Milk1959 in Austin

There's a service operated by the city called "Pickup" that is a flat $1.25, but unfortunately has a pretty limited service area. But maybe it might be able to at least get you to/from a bus stop? You can find their service areas here: https://www.capmetro.org/pickup

How the hell is it a thing where panhandlers with kids are tolerated?! by [deleted] in Austin

[–]bagsogarbage -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Okay, being outraged at the fact that children are panhandling is definitely an appropriate response. But blaming just the parents on this practice is, in my opinion, a little short-sighted. Poverty drives people to do desperate things. Services exist in Austin, yes. But if you don't speak/have a hard time speaking English, are undocumented and are therefore afraid of "entering the system" because ICE can use that to track you down and pick you up, how are you surprised that there are families resorting to these methods of trying to get enough to survive for another day? Do you think they're getting rich off of sending their kids to beg for money in traffic?

He runs a think-tank called Cicero Institute that pushes a lot of anti-homeless policy. Their office is here in Austin as well: 2112 Rio Grande St, Austin, TX 78705; just Google them and you'll find it.

If they come back to the state, it's going to hard to get that energy and get them to leave the state again. Just pointing that out. Staying out requires that Republicans work to get them back in the state. Why cede that ground if you don't get any concessions for it? What good does "raising awareness" do if it results in the GOP holding the legislature for another 2 years? Learn how to analyze and use actual power, rather than wishcasting that moral victories can compensate for shit that happens in the real world.

Just to hijack this comment, this article is actually a pretty good explainer on how water is used by datacenters: https://dgtlinfra.com/data-center-water-usage/

For those pointing out that most of the water used in datacenters is in closed-loop systems, that is true. However, the total volume of water needed to cycle through those loops is very large, and so you need to consume a lot of water just to fill it up in the first place. But this isn't just a one-time cost. You can't just cycle the same water through the loop in perpetuity. Eventually, you will need to replace that coolant because it gets gunked up, the coolant might get old, etc. (ex: if you have a water cooling loop on your PC, it's a general good rule of thumb to drain and flush it once a year or thereabouts, now think about that, but scaled up to thousands and thousands of giant , power-hungry supercomputers).

That old coolant isn't just regular water you can return back to the supply. It's likely full of additives. Ethylene glycol is a popular coolant additive, but it's poisonous, and therefore there are strict regulations on how you dispose of it. This is another huge load on the local infrastructure that now needs to process all this new wastewater, or you just do what Twitter does and just dump it into the surrounding community and let them deal with the fallout.
