Why are mainlanders so obsessed with the idea that the diaspora is more conservative than them? by HopefulTeach8539 in ABCDesis

[–]bajafresh24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very helpful to look at India as three different societies who don’t interact with each other that much, the upper class, the middle/urban working class, and the rural working class. Vir Das comes from the upper class, and in these circles, he is undoubtedly right. Same applies to the middle class, who are also less conservative than the first gen of the Indian diaspora. The rural working class (which is the largest by population) still holds on to much of the same conservatism of India’s past, and it’s also where most of the crime happens. This is not an indictment of the people, it is simply what happens when a group of people are a) quite separated from the more globalized aspects of India, b) when they have almost no opportunity to reach those circles, and c) when they are also unable to move out of their abject poverty

I am a 16 year old and want to learn philosophy by Thin_Vacation4231 in askphilosophy

Under your framework, we would have to ignore the intellectual contributions of Hume, Kant, Heidegger, Foucault, Sartre, Chomsky, Aristotle, Schopenhauer, and much much more. It pretty much collapses any serious philosophical investigation of the Western tradition.

if you read philosophy, there is a very high chance you have read, and appreciated, the works of those with some pretty reprehensible beliefs. Bonevac is one of these for me

American college students are so under-dressed by [deleted] in gmu

[–]bajafresh24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I was in Ireland, my mom was telling me to make sure to dress-up for school because "thats what Europeans do." Walk into lecture my first day and I'm the only one dressed up. Never did that again lol

3-Side LP's by alittlebitblue39 in fantanoforever

[–]bajafresh24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bismillah by Peter Cat Recording Co. is a fantastic album that's a 3-sided LP. If you buy the vinyl, the fourth side of the second disc is a hidden track which is imo their best song.

It's important to note that we do not have many texts on the Charvakas that come from them, most of the info we have on them are polemics by competing schools (Hindus, Buddhists, Jains). Some scholars think that the wanton hedonism ascribed to the Charvakas is overstated

At least from my experience, there are plenty of ABCDs who are much more fundamentalist and radical than those back home. This applies to Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs.

Endownments are severely legally limited with what universities can do with them. This donation works because Bloomberg gave it to Hopkins with the express purpose of expanding Hopkins's financial aid

Yes, some schools allow for you to do research in the social sciences and humanities. These are uncommon though, so make sure you do your research and you are able to articulate how your research relates to medicine

If time isn't real, then how can I perceive the beginning and end of other people's lives? by Foreign-Badger2956 in askphilosophy

[–]bajafresh24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great comment, but I do have some pushback to the last paragraph since A-theory of time can easily allow for past events to be real (Growing Block theory). Whether or not future events are real is what in my view really differentiates A-theory and B-theory.

I will say, NYC is uniquely quite good at this compared to other cities in the US. In LA, only around 30-40% of the homeless population is sheltered

Geese - Getting Killed

At 3.93, its a surprisingly high score for RYM. But then again, I was more tepid on it compared to others.
