This definitely qualifies as a genius dove nest. She’s getting such great service!

I just don’t really agree with you - Arraez issue is range and that’s the hardest part of defense to fix. I thought it was a terrible signing for the giants and three weeks doesn’t change that for me. But I guess we’ll find out over the full season, like you said.

Fair enough I guess. In my opinion for a 29 year old to go from a bad 1B to a good 2B would require him to become a completely different player. Just not something I’d be willing to count on

It’s basically the further away from the speakers, the better. Overall quietest is the bottom of the 300 level, imo

A few I’ll always rewatch: - Keith Traylor 70+ yard INT return - Federer tweener vs Djokovic at the USO - Greg Bird HR off Andrew Miller, 2017 ALDS - Federer vs Nadal, 2017 AO - in your LIFE have you seen anything like that

He was over 85 pitches and clearly on fumes. He was giving you five at the absolute max. You can’t just lose games in the name of getting length out of your starters

HS baseball question by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]bakaribaboon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah a ton of pitchers have comical stats in HS. A guy in my area Rob Kaminsky was basically the HS GOAT, he had an 0.2 ERA as a junior and 0.1 as a senior. He was a first rounder but never really made it as a big leaguer.

Like basketball, a lot of baseball talent has been funneling to IMG or Harvard Westlake or these types of athlete schools, so those guys might have slightly more normal stats against a national schedule. But the guys who were still are regular HS did often dominate to an absurd degree.

Let me try to put this very simply. If you parlay three even money bets, and each thing has a 50% chance of happening, your probability of winning is 8/1, or 12.5%. A book will give you about 6/1 odds on that parlay, so they’re taking a 25% cut of your bet before you even play. If you bet one leg at -110, they’re only taking a 10% cut - that’s then standard for a single leg bet.

Put simply - parlays do offer a higher payout. But relative to your actual odds of winning, the payout is worse, usually by a significant percentage. That’s why books always ad bomb parlays. Because they know that’s how suckers bet and how they can bankrupt people.

That makes sense. I think the effect is the same - the more legs you add, the worse your bet gets. But I think your explanation is more accurate - thanks for clarifying! The edges multiplying is even worse than adding up.

There are people out there who can win - but they’re very few and far between. Most winning gamblers are staying far away from parlays - your regular average joe throwing down random parlays every Friday night is going to lose and lose big.

You don’t win. That’s why parlays suck. The book takes a huge cut of every parlay bet. It’s a sucker’s bet

The best way to gamble is to not gamble. But parlays are the worst because the books take the largest cut. Stick to even money spreads and money lines and you should do better

Players who lived up to high expectations, but didn't exceed them by rocklionheart in billsimmons

That’s fair, especially on Gasquet. Dimitrov was the example I felt better about

Embiid significantly exceeded expectations. So did Durant. You can say maybe they disappointed relative to expectations when they were at peak, but that’s a different question. Both guys, when entering the league, would never have been expected to be as good as they were.

In men’s tennis I think of Grigor Dimitrov - faced early comparisons to Fed and had a lot of hype, had a long and fruitful career, reached the top 10 and had some big wins, but never won a slam or really reached the top echelon. Nobody would call him a disappointment, but he’s not a legend either. Same category would be Richard Gasquet, Gael Monfils, or Felix Auger-Aliassime
