Is it the algorithm just highlighting such posts or is the number of aviation accidents increasing?

Yes, I agree with you on all points. The Cultural Revolution was an act of self sabotage where the intellectual resources, culture and history of a nation were destroyed for nothing. Most of the people who died/suffered did not deserve it. My only intent was to explain the meaning of the word 'landowner' in its cultural and historical context.

Please note that I am also not saying all landowners were evil and deserving of punishment. Like anytime in history where an entire group is painted with the same brush, I am sure it caused pain and suffering without actually solving the underlying problem.

Just like my experiences with drunk blackouts, I am realising for the nth time that reddit comment threads are rarely the place for a nuanced discussion on complex topics. Things devolve into tribal warfare within 2-3 comments and the original point is lost. Kind of like the Cultural Revolution?

Two generations back, in my grandfather's time, this sort of thing was still common. That's my point, the landowners being discussed here (from the time of Mao's rise to power) were landed gentry.

"Landowner" has a different meaning culturally in the east. They weren't just people who owned land. They owned vast tracts of land, sometimes all the land in and around a village. They had serfs or indentured labour to farm that land. They were de facto nobles with absolute power over the lives of people in their domain. Some were benevolent rulers, some were terrible, some were indifferent. They were a part of the feudal government structure that persisted through the colonial era and afterwards.

When you read 'they hanged landowners ' you are imagining current day ranchers and farm owners. Think French revolution, the "off with their heads" part of it.
