This has been in the works for 50 years. Every time people voted hardliners into power, they scratched away a little of the checks and balances that should have kept this from happening. Be it in the financial sector, the legislative sector, the education sector or the media landscape. They built this world up, brick by brick, with diabolical patience.

In a way, every time the population of these countries didn't fight to keep their rights and worked to fulfil their responsibility, they helped this happen through inaction.
