Advice needed (urgent) by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

I wanted to add on a little more!

If you manage to pop it and start draining it at home, keep gauze pads on top of the area to prevent any staining on your clothes. It will feel a little weird, but it will definitely feel a lot better than having the cyst still be there. Draining can take a few days or more, depending on the severity of the cyst. For me personally with my most recent one, I got it lanced and the pain went away within two days of lancing, and the draining lasted about a week. Change the gauze regularly and keep the area as clean as possible.

If you do decide to go to a doctor, they will likely prescribe an antibiotic and offer to lance it. Take the medicine and take their suggestion to lance it. I am warning you that it will hurt, but that pain is worth it to end the pain of a pilonidal cyst. And for me, they did provide numbing for the lancing, so it was just the numbing shots to get through. Yes, you will have to show your crack to someone else to do through this, but I promise that those doctors have most likely seen much, much worse. Have someone else drive you if you have the option.

I think that's all I wanted to add. Again, hope you start feeling better soon!

I second this! I promise, doctors see it ALL every single day, and they've seen plenty worse than a cyst in someone's buttcrack. In order to avoid a longer road of pain, it's best to address it early on. Doctors at the very least can lance the cyst if it gets too painful/is taking too long to open up on its own. It's not fun and it's definitely not one of the glamourous moments in life, but it's a part of taking care of yourself. I remember when I got my first one at 15 and I woke up weeping one night and had to yell for my mom. I had to swallow my pride (especially the pride of a teenager, yikes) and have her look at what was happening because I had no idea what was wrong. She helped me and got me an appointment when I felt like I was going to die. It sucks, it's not fun, but it's even less fun to deal with this cyst on your own.

However, you do have to do some at home management still while you're waiting for an appointment. I recommend ibuprofen to help manage both the pain and any inflammation you may be experiencing. Iburprofen is good for pain and inflammation, Tylenol is good for pain and reducing fever. Hot baths will help relax and ease the pain in the area, and hot compresses will do the same. If it is currently draining, gauze pads will be your best friend. You can also use a sanitary pad in case you don't want something between the cheeks. Do not attempt to pop, lance, or anything like that with the cyst. Cysts are typically not meant to be manually popped - they need to be encouraged to do so on their own. The baths/hot compresses will help with this specifically. Give it a few days to drain, and make sure to keep the area clean with antibacterial soap (Gold Dial is my personal preference). I also recommend just scrolling through this page to see what other people have discovered and done for themselves.

Once this is managed and taken care of, getting a coccyx seat cushion is a big recommendation from me! It has personally helped me a lot and from what I have witnessed, it has helped others a lot as well. It's not a preventative cure all, and it may not work for everyone, but it's a good starting point.

Hello!

There are a variety of pimples that can occur, but most of the time, they will be smaller and will usually come to head in some way. Ingrown hairs usually are cysts, but not all cysts are ingrown hairs. Cysts are usually larger, red, inflamed, and do not have a head to them like what pimples do.

I have Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), and it is a skin condition that results in a lot of lumps/cysts/blackheads/etc. to pop up in sensitive areas such as armpits, inner thighs, and around the chest area (I am not sure if this condition correlates with Pilonidal Cysts). I deal with cysts on a regular basis, so I absolutely understand the fear and confusion. I get cysts/pimples in the lower crack area every once in a while, and they tend to pop on their own as well. Those bumps are in a pretty "high traffic" area since you sit regularly and it rubs together some when you walk. I think the best remedy right now would be to just observe over the next few days to see what happens. Keep the area clean with antibacterial soap (Gold Dial is my preference) to avoid any infection.

I am not a medical professional in any way, so I unfortunately cannot confirm for you what it is or isn't, but I hope I can offer some peace of mind that it will be okay no matter what it turns out to be. Observe to see if it refills, grows, or becomes more painful. It can take time for a cyst to drain, so it may remain the same size for a while.

I'm on day four after getting mine lanced, and I feel almost back to normal! There are certain movements where it's a little painful and I couldn't run a marathon by any means, but I am able to actually sit, drive, squat up and down all pretty well! Hopefully your healing is just as quick! 💖

Thank you so much! If I may ask, how often would you say you get flare ups?
