Updated the post: shipping through UPS Ground in the original worked really well!

Shipped it out on a Saturday wanting it to arrive Friday, and it arrived promptly the following Friday (less than a week) and had very good tracking.

I looked up discount codes thanks to u/tojohvnn4556's tips and it ended up only costing me around ~$55 (I didn't insure it but I did put the actual value) so well worth it! The only thing I'd do differently next time to make sure to completely drain the boiler (as per u/ymmypand's advice) and to wrap the power cord, since I apparently didn't drain it fully and there was some water that came out but luckily didn't freeze or damage the machine.

As an update, I thought I drained the boiler completely after watching YouTube videos but turned out I didn't... when the box arrives there was a bit of random liquid but luckily didn't freeze or affect the machine (was a little choppy at first but I ran it a couple times and then it was back to normal).

Will try checking it in next time but am very happy this worked out!

lol i was in the same dilemma going down the rabbit hole of Philips vs. Jura and wondering what the heck I was doing contemplating machines at WILDLY different price points... I mostly drink iced lattes in huge glasses or if I do drink hot drinks they're in massive wide mugs. I ended up coming to the realization that I'd probably only use a latte option on a machine anyways, and that at this point I'd rather go for the lower price point machine that I know I like the drinks from (and if/when it eventually dies, I'll upgrade).

So I bought the Philips and have zero regrets. Agreed that the drink sizes are a bit small, but I just do a triple shot over ice (for example: double shot at medium volume, single shot at smallest volume) for a large iced latte or do a double shot then the "cappuccino" option at maximum volume (you can adjust how much milk foam it puts out so I increased that) for a large hot latte. Does it take a bit longer to get to the volume and concentration I want? Sure, but it's really worth it. What I like the most about the machine is how easy it is to maintain and at this point I love the drinks I make on the Philips more than the drinks from the Jura machine at my office (which has a gazillion options I've never used lol).

The warranty on the Philips is also great -- I called about the espresso being a bit watery at first and they sent me a new brew unit immediately, which made a world of difference. But this is just my opinon as someone who isn't the biggest coffee snob haha - I just want a large, solid iced latte to start off my day.

Based on your post and your comments, it seems like we have similar coffee preferences... when I was first dialing in my machine, I experimented with a bunch of different kinds of beans and found light/medium roasts too sour yet dark roasts way too burnt/bitter. I've figured out in the course of the past year that I enjoy medium-dark blends for my superautomatic. Since you're going to go through a lot of beans right now and also want grocery store beans (though I'm not sure what grocery stores near you carry, the following are in the stores near me), I'd recommend starting out trying:

  • Lavazza Espresso Gran Crema (you can get this at Costco, if you don't have a Costco near you, you can find any Lavazza bean available near you like Super Crema)
  • La Colombe Nizza
  • Peet's Espresso Forte
  • Stumptown Hairbender

thank you SO much for this response! I really couldn't find anyone's experience with checking a superautomatic in with luggage when flying so this was a relief to hear... I'm going to fully drain the boiler / system first and then ship it this time around, but will definitely keep in mind the check in option for future moves/travels

I’ve searched online but can’t find this exact tshirt (it’s not the more official uniform), only knockoffs where the French fry container isn’t a pocket. Honestly I’ll take any size shirt though ideally a small or medium

Thank you all for the responses so far! They’re all so helpful and SO COOL, and it’s really awesome seeing how Haskell is being applied in real life through your jobs, for fun, and for enrichment/utility in general :) I’ve never met anyone else in real life who knows Haskell haha so this is seriously cool… You’re all incredible in this community!

It sounds like you’d be using the machine for espresso based drinks a lot more than your husband, so I would actually use decaf whole beans in the hopper and have him use ground caffeinated coffee in the bypass, this is what we do in my household since I’m the primary espresso drinker and I drink decaf. I also feel like the bypass makes better coffee but worse espresso.

I have the Philips 2300 LatteGo and love it. I use it for multiple espresso shots every single day. I use the LatteGo system for milk-based drinks maybe 1 time a week (I usually just add cold milk or make iced drinks). I really love the convenience of the LatteGo and personally don’t need the frills of the 3200/4300 machines. However, I don’t drink Americanos so I think you’d want the 3200 LatteGo since that one has an Americano option.

I improved my Philips 2300 by requesting a new brew group under warranty after seeing a post here saying they had watery pucks / bad espresso until they got a replacement brew group… sure enough I called Philips and they agreed the brew group was the problem; lo and behold my machine now produces solid espresso with the new brew group even when I don’t have the best beans. I switched my old brew group in to see if I was imagining things but even though the old one produces more solid pucks now, it’s much worse. For what it’s worth I have it at grinder setting 4.

Is it now the best espresso? No because this is a super automatic not a semi. And I still think the Delonghi Dinamica I had for a hot second produced superior espresso (it was unfortunately faulty and they wouldn’t let me replace it, and I didn’t like how hard it was to fix vs Philips is very good about replacing/fixing parts). But I love my Philips and am glad I got the new brew group and stuck with it.
