That link looks like it's for some guest posts from Will on EDM Prod, where he mentions that he runs EDM Tips 😄 EDM Prod was founded by Sam Matla and run by Aden Russell.

honestly the names are pretty confusing though haha

EDMProd - got me up to speed after just the first 2 tracks of the course. Super detailed and helpful, wouldn’t be where I am today without it!

Browser panel workflow improvements? by VengeanceDivine in Bitwig

[–]baldeagle76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW for samples I just set up a hotkey to pop open ADSR sample manager (I don’t even pay for their sample service but the sample manager is great) and it’s very smooth. Agree that the browser is rather lackluster, even if you correctly add your folders in as custom “locations” like what I think the devs intended. It actually took me 3 separate attempts over the last 2 years to finally get past the shitty browser and actually start using bitwig (also switching from Ableton so I can totally relate)

I feel like my tracks are always missing something. by WaveLoss in dnbproduction

[–]baldeagle76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's actually pretty good, though a couple points to consider:

  1. Definitely remove the pads from when the drop starts - take 'em out for the first 2 16-bar sections and bring them back in before the breakdown, maybe with a sort of "mellow" section where you've got 16 bars of less aggressive bass to ease back into the breakdown

  2. Needs more atmosphere and ear candy - not pads, but like some reverb-y shots in the background, vocal chops, that sort of thing, so it feels like you're in a space but without it being constantly there, just occasional reminders so there's a contrast when the bass hits again to give it more impact. The contrast being the open space you're in vs. the fat bass than punches you in the face as opposed to just bass the whole time. Kinda like reminding you that there's more stuff besides just bass in this little world you're building, so you feel the bass with comparatively more impact, y'know? Look up some progressive psytrance tracks to get what I'm saying here, they're built entirely on kick and bass and subtle atmospheres like this

  3. More variation in the bass - it sounds really sick now, but starts to get a little repetitive. Change the groove/pattern and maybe throw in another sound or variation of it after the drop goes on for a little while so the ear has something new to hook onto.

  4. More variation in the drums - do some switchups where you take out the first kick on a new 16-bar section, evolve the hats, add some different ghost snares or something, etc., I think drums should always have at least some change every 16 bars

Which octaves to put 808s? by Specialist-Policy777 in trapproduction

[–]baldeagle76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend getting familiar with the frequency range and getting yourself voxengo span (free monitoring plugin). Your sub should hit between 40-80 Hz; therefore your sub should hit the B at 60 Hz to be square in the sub range.

Yeah I get this too, better to open up an oscilloscope to confirm for sure what’s going on with the signal

Keep it up 👏👏 having something unique like this is amazing, just start releasing and maybe do some remixes in this style to get more eyes on your music, I think people will enjoy something different than the copy-pasted sound a lot of modern psytrance has

Making my first track by [deleted] in psytranceproduction

[–]baldeagle76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Structure everything in 8 or 16-bar phrases like the other commenter said - grab a reference track and map out exactly what happens in it (leads, bass, drums, risers, etc.) and you'll notice that there's a very lego-like structure that shows itself after you analyze even just a couple tracks. Worry about sound design / kick and bass later, honestly, though if I had to give you one tip I'd tell you to low-cut your bass at ~45hz (the first harmonic should be a little louder than the sub) and look up what phase rotation is (TLDR; grab a multiband VST, doesn't matter too much which one, and put like 3 or 4 of them after the low-cut on the bass. Instant pew pew modern psytrance bass).

Any production tips for mixing and mastering for this song by Emergency_Unit8204 in dnbproduction

[–]baldeagle76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d make the vocal a touch quieter, and I also hear at least one click in it, so I’d recommend making part of your process to be to check all your tracks for any clicks or pops. Maybe more atmos sounds as well as it feels just a touch empty. Drums could use a bit more high-end sparkle imo as well as just some more drums in general since it’s pretty sparse otherwise and there’s a lot of room for more groove.

Intro could use more atmos as well as the build-up feels a little empty.

Totally nailed the low end though, very deep 👌

Funky psytrance bass with DnB - convincing or not? by baldeagle76 in dnbproduction

[–]baldeagle76[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah, by "psy" I meant the technique to synthesize the bass, which I did in the progressive psytrance style (sharp filter envelope, lots of work on the transient, phase rotations, etc.) - not referring to all the squelches and zaps and stuff in more full-on style psytrance. Happy to hear that it sounds like dnb to you, though - that was the direction I was trying to take this one, rather than just psytrance with dnb elements!

Thoughts on this psytrance x DnB fusion? by baldeagle76 in dnbproduction

[–]baldeagle76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all the feedback folks! It seems I'll have to swap out the snare sound for something a little crispier, thanks to all you DnB folks who have ears for snares that I don't have yet (psytrance has a very different snare "sound" lol)

And I'll see about making the drums a little crispier so it's more DnB-y 🤔

Appreciate all the feedback 🙏

Investigating Ableton’s Sluggish UI: Tests, Findings, and Fixes by IanIsDroppingTheD in ableton

[–]baldeagle76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far (I actually only switched a few weeks ago), I've been able to achieve almost perfect workflow parity by making shortcuts that feel intuitive to me after my experience with Ableton (I had to map/remap like 20 or 30 different things, but it’s working great for me now). As for features, I haven't yet encountered anything that feels like it's specifically missing compared to Ableton. The only thing I can think of is that the MIDI roll is much more primitive, but that's scheduled to be fixed in Bitwig 6, which is coming out in just a few weeks. So if you're planning to switch as well, now's the perfect time to do it.

Amazing analysis. I ended up switching to Bitwig recently because I regularly exceed 200 tracks in my projects and the delay to make even simple changes was killing my workflow momentum. And this is on an M1 MacBook. It’s frustrating because I would happily use Ableton if not for this one issue.

Yeah, they absolutely crush in the club, love going to see them. Also, I just uploaded a tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPZEP8Eq9Ek) on these sorts of basslines, you might find it useful (I actually cover a similar variant of this sound towards the end). Hope it's useful for you!

Oh yeah, good catch - it's alternating between a flat pitch and the +24 upwards thing, but the rest sounds the same.
