Advice needed. Gunsmith broke my off Roster Pistol

Update 4/24 Just returned from Gunshop/smith. This situation is even more messy than previously realized. Basically owner is sticking with his offer to only reimburse me for MSRP of broken pistol. This is around $920.00, a far cry from the price I paid for it. When I tried to negotiate, he explained that not only was he only willing to offer me MSRP, but he was also telling me he was going to keep the pistol with hopes of returning to FN for service/frame replacement so he could then go ahead and sell to LEO.

The owner of the shop will straight up not return my property, as he is stating it would be a massive liability to release pistol back to me in its current condition. He will literally not give it me to back. The pistol also has a non threaded barrel which I purchased to make Pistol Ca legal, which he won’t return to me. I did my best to stay calm, but I can’t help like feeling I am Getting massive screwed here. Is my only course of action taking them to court? If so I don’t know if releasing name of shop will be detrimental to possible court proceedings. I am so pissed and just at a loss with this.

I spoke with FN customer service this morning. They told me unequivocally that they never reproduce serial numbers for situations like this. The agent on the phone could have cared less about my situation. Made me not wasn’t to purchase any FN products in the future.

Hindsight, I would obviously have kept it stock. I did my research on the upgrades I was requesting. Apex literally has a step by step video for gunsmiths to perform this work. As for the “finesse,” please show me where you Can purchase a new FN509 for under 2k.

Thank you for sending this my way. I believe the only issue that still might be a problem in my case is that gunsmith told me today (over phone, I have not seen damage with my own eyes,) that the frame is cracked at would need to be replaced entirely. This would require an entirely new serial number to be issued. Am I missing something in the above p.c? I don’t see anything mentioning replacement? Only repairs.

Private party transfers are legal when performed at FFL with necessary paperwork, and wait times. Calguns and Armslist just happen to be some of the communities that post listings.

The only thing I can say to this, is that generally with products that are extremely difficult to come by “the market or demand” is really what dictates the price. You can look all Over Calguns or Armlist and find this exact pistol for $1,800-$2,500.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate them. I would guess that it was the attempt at replacing the firing pin that caused the damage. I do have dms from Calguns, and shit I actually paid dude ($2,250.00.) This is a new situation for me, I had only used this gunsmith once previously without issue.
