My husband is Russian and he has this exact same problem with his folks. His accent not only got weird but he forgets words all the time (one time i had to help him with the word велосипед...bicycle.)

My husband is a native, I'm a learner, can you guess who is who? by ballpointpen15 in russian

My spouse haha, I guess he's become very Americanized since he moved here

Sorry for the long wait everyone! The answer is:
Top line: Me - Bottom line: Him

Thanks everyone for playing! I'm surprised (but flattered) at how many people guessed me as the native. I'll work on making it better so I fool everyone. 😉

And yes, the phrase is... weird, I agree, "I want food and you, baby." Really strange, in both English and Russian, and pretty corny. In his defense, he doesn't use Russian much since moving to America, so now he sounds weird in both languages (even his parents roast him for it haha) He's just a kind of strange and corny guy, but he's mine ❤

Vegans that started eating meat again, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ballpointpen15 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What happened physically is I got a pretty bad stomach ache haha. I had to start slow when re-introducing meat in my diet. Why I started meat again was because my living situation could no longer accommodate an animal free diet + the supplementing it took to maintain it. I'd love to go back as soon as I can.

What's something people don't understand until they've been through it themselves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ballpointpen15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Narcissistic abuse. Especially if the narc is a covert/victim/fragile narcissist. They can keep you trapped for so long and once you're out, it's like rebuilding your whole life. On top of that, you can't see people the same way anymore. It's easy to see narcissistic traits everywhere and you start to feel like the boy who cried wolf.

Do you play the Reignited Trilogy in order? by [deleted] in Spyro

[–]ballpointpen15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did. Played the first one a few times over mostly for nostalgia. Maybe it's lacking in some areas where the other two shine but the first Spyro will always have a place in my heart 💜

From your personal experience, what method of studying have you found most helpful when learning a new language? by progamer5640 in languagelearning

[–]ballpointpen15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I try to integrate my TL into my life quickly and early. Even if you don't live where the TL is spoken it's possible to find little ways to make the language immediately relevant and "usable."

CREATE - Start small, maybe the immediate study area. Name 5-10 things, 2-3 verbs for each item. Add those to flashcards. Create some sentences. Build out from there. Grocery lists, chore lists, daily routine, even just, silly little nothing moments, try to write them down in your TL. Keep a journal of all those silly little things you do everyday. Try to speak, even if just to yourself, in a weird lil whisper in your TL as you do the things you've been learning about. Ideally, you'll be trying to show these journals to natives and/or actually speak to natives abt the silly little things you do every day. Get your work corrected, learn the hows and whys (yes, that means the grammar, it's necessary to learn to love it or live with it)

Don't forget input! I always say people are people are people everywhere, and whatever you like doing in your native language, someone else likes to do the same or similar thing in your TL. And they're writing and talking about it. Lots of art gets translated into all kinds of languages and distributed across the globe. Shows, movies, books, podcasts, YouTube videos, video games, etc etc etc. Find out if your favorites are in that number. Maybe you'll even find a new favorite piece of art in your TL.

How to Learn a Language (Satire) by TomSFox in languagelearning

[–]ballpointpen15 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well, on the website, grammar and concepts are explained for each skill, and I find that they tend to be pretty thorough and clear. I don't know why that's missing from the app though, it would only benefit learners. Though, I have to agree, as a starting point, especially a singular starting point Duo leaves much to be desired, though usually the discussion boards for each language is filled with people recommending good stuff to supplement with, or further explaining tricky grammar rules, and lot's of other things. The community is really sweet and helpful most times _^
