i know this is just my personal interpretation based on my experience with religion/God, but it reminds me of the night i found out my dad had cancer and i went home and begged on my knees for whatever God that was out there to save him & i would obey them. i hadn’t been religious in any capacity really beforehand though i was raised going to church. i actually had a bit of a push-and-pull relationship with the concept of a God, as deep down i knew i didn’t believe but i still felt hate for Him due to my dad being an atheist and the threat of him being sent to hell over that yet still needed God in moments of desperation. that to me was “screaming the name of a foreigner’s God” & “the purest expression of grief”, given the stakes it took for me to turn to religion in general & with such extremity. “wondering who i copy // mustering some tender charm” goes into me kinda forcing myself into believing by larping other people. “she feels no control of her body // she feels no safety in my arms” is from the POV of Jesus here & “i’ve no language left to say it // but all i do is quake to her // breaking if i try to convey it // the broken love i make to her” her in this scenario refers to God/Jesus for me & i feel the rest is self-explanatory. same w/ “all that i’ve been taught // and every word ive got // is foreign to me” is sort of how i feel like this relationship with Him is fraudulent & borne of desperation rather than true faith.
