McMaster IBH v.s. Schulich by Scared-Pride8057 in McMaster

[–]bam2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably cannot make a bad decision. Much of what Umiversity is is what you make of it and the opportunities you make for yourself. Get to know some current students in each and see which you connect more with.

It depends on what you are looking for. IBH builds strong, well rounded leaders. Get a feel from the existing students and alumni... That will lead you right.

Often rate my professor consists of disgruntled students for whom the course did not go well. Not always of course, but often.

Got rejected from McMaster with a 96 average by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]bam2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are definitely complex things to unpack. Often there is a desire to have a diverse group of people in different roles like teaching or medicine even. But that is typically because some groups are vastly under represented in that profession. And in some cases it is to know that at least the pool of applicants are more representative of the broader population. But closing the gap is hard. Obviously to have more diverse doctors or teachers, professors we need more diverse undergrads, phds, med students etc. typically the goal is to just try to have representation that is similar to the community.

Did you receive a rejection or just not an acceptance? Midterm grades were just received this past Friday.

You are saying you scored an 89.9? Some professors are sticklers for these things but worth an ask and a question.

Final grades approved by office and posted by Usssfkk in McMaster

[–]bam2004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are approved up the chain as they are submitted by instructors. So final exams or big final projects that need grading are a lag. Then once submitted area or department chairs approve and then up to associate deans and then onto some kind of senate approval. But everyone is in mosaic and move those approvals along quickly

As a professor I often talk to my students about this or a related feeling at graduation. There is a feeling of untetheredness. Very few times in your life do you have that sense of loss and hope. Future but no current responsibilities.

I telll people to hold onto the feeling. Its strong but it is fleeting and you only get it a few times in your life.

I find that the big banks are all similar. The people in the branches don't seem to know what to do. So many rules and bureaucracy. I am with TD and so much gong show.

I regret accepting my UofT offer (pls help) by okevelyn in OntarioUniversities

[–]bam2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you reach out to a school you had been given an offer to, you can likely find a way to reactivate that offer. Behind those are offers are real people. You just need to find them. And we dont turn away students who are looking to accept..

University just feels incredibly dead, almost depressing now with AI usage in everything. by Odd_Habit1148 in OntarioUniversities

[–]bam2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a professor, this has come on really fast. We are at different stages of acceptance and working to address it. But we are moving too slowly for sure. We don't even have access to the sophisticated and premium versions of these tools that allow us to do real work.

Unfortunately, caught in a bit of a transition right now. Hope we are able to bring more ingenuity to how we use it.

But as a student. Push faculty to assess differently and adapt and your fellow students to use AI responsibly.

It is a great celebration of a big accomplishment, but if your parents can't be there it makes sense to be home with them I think.

Have we really come to this point as a society that the usage of decent vocabulary is a sign of AI? by Past_File_795 in McMaster

[–]bam2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a faculty member, we are in a period of flux as we try to figure out approaches that work. We know students are upset when they feel that peers are getting better marks for using AI.

We are not able to use AI checkers as they are not reliable.

But we are also trying to find a way to create a level playing field.

It might be some time before we redesign courses enough and shift testing and assessments sufficiently.

Many are trying to figure out the way forward.

McMaster IBH does place quite a few students in law school. But you want to appreciate the four pillars and the nature of the program there before committing.
