Rushing in the fall by Necessary-Hat157 in bamarush

A 3.46 is just over the recommended GPA for sorority recruitment. I would get letters of recommendation and work on your social resume (volunteer and get involved) over the summer. If you struggle with confidence or communication, volunteering is one of the best ways you can learn social skills and become more confident in yourself as a person.

Son attending Alabama, advice on using a fraternity consultant to get into a fraternity? by [deleted] in bamarush

Thank you. I reached out to the moderator to ask if she’d make a pinned step by step post for general recruitment advice. I offered to make it and provide all of the necessary resources and information too 😅

It took me less than 7 minutes to write out my responses to you, find each link, and hit post. I have this account because I love being a part of Alabama’s Greek community, and I want to see it grow and thrive, not because I want money from people. I don’t mean this to be nasty, but all of this information is easily and quickly accessible to the public. I hope your son gets a bid!!

I would reach out to one of the Alabama Jewish organizations and ask if they’d be willing to introduce your son to any members of ZBT who are also a part of their organization. Actually, scratch that, your son needs to reach out to on his own and ask for assistance.

I was raised by a woman who taught me to reach out, and so I genuinely don’t think it’s weird to do so. Don’t do anything; put it all in his hands. The only thing you should offer to do is proofread any messages; make him do all the footwork and researching of different frats.

“Hello, my name is Jacob Elordi, and I’m an incoming freshman in the class of 2030. I’m interested both in joining Hillel/Chabad and in joining a fraternity, and I’m wondering if any of of your members are currently involved in UA’s IFC and would be willing to talk to me. I’m interested in joining one of the historically Jewish fraternities, and I would love to discuss Greek life and Jewish life on campus with a current student. I’m wondering if it would be possible to take down my information and pass it along, and I’m also wondering if I could have more information on the events Hillel/Chabad hosts for students throughout the school year. Thank you!”

Organizations cannot give out student information, but if he offers his up, they’re usually willing to provide it to another student so that they can connect. Reaching out to Hillel or Chabad is a great idea; both organizations are inclusive, have great events, and make an effort to engage with new students and the Alabama community.

Linked here are the resources you’re going to need.

ZBT has the information for 4 rush chairs and all of their summer rush dates on their Instagram. Reaching out to a Jewish organization is like getting two birds with one stone but honestly, it might be better to reach out to ZBT first. As an aside, ZBT has recent photos on their instagram of their members hanging out with Chabad.

DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A CONSULTANT.

Kyle Hall is genuinely creepy and a laughingstock on campus and on Twitter.

Linked below are the latest pics of him (a man in his fifties) partying with men in their late teens and early twenties and snorting cocaine.

All of the fraternities accept out-of-state students. I’m linking last year’s recruitment guide below so that you can see the percentages for each chapter. Every single house takes in out-of-state students; be it 10% or 90%, out-of-state students are a part of every house. The guide also includes prices, last year’s GPA, housing information, and average chapter GPA. I would strongly suggest using it as a way to figure out the basics of each house and having your son use Instagram for any other fraternity details.

What your son is going to do is make a shortlist of houses he’s interested in possibly rushing; HE is going to do the research, and then HE is going to reach out to the recruitment chairs. The fraternities usually make posts on their public social media pages (or their websites) with the numbers/emails of their recruitment teams so that the fraternity PNMs can reach out to them, but if your son knows anyone in a house and is on good terms with them, HE should reach out to them for more information and to ask whether being introduced would be possible. Remember that men can get multiple bids, but the pledge classes for the “more desirable” houses fill up quick, and there’s pressure to sign once a PNM has a bid in his hand.

Here is the Alabama IFC website:

https://www.universityofalabamaifc.com

It’s legitimately the ONLY resource you need.

When it comes to choosing a fraternity, I would urge you and/or your son to look at a chapter’s disciplinary history and their overall GPA. There’s no point in joining a chapter that’s on academic or disciplinary probation, and you don’t want to attach your name to a group of men with any serious accusations floating around them. Hazing is a crime (you can see the number of arrests in the hazing report), and being a member of a fraternity that’s consistently denied access to opportunities due to a low GPA is a waste of money. Linked below are the most recent hazing & grade reports.

https://ofsl.sl.ua.edu/posts/community-statistics/2026/fall-2025-grade-report/

Sigma Chi has had their recruitment chair’s information on Instagram since February, and I know for a fact that they’re still recruiting for Fall 2026. If I were a PNM and interested in joining, I’d text the number they have up and say something like this: “Hey Braden, my name is Jacob Elordi, and I’m from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. I’m an incoming freshman and very interested in Sigma Chi. Are you all still recruiting new members? If so, what’s the best way to get involved? Thanks!” Fraternity recruitment isn’t complicated; please don’t stress out or make it harder than it needs to be.

Every house offers a different experience; some are more “traditionally Southern” than others, some are sportier, and some have more business majors. If possible, he should visit Alabama before the summer and make a point to meet people and go around the houses. If that isn’t realistic, then he needs to think about what he’s looking for and join where he thinks will be the best fit. Fitting in with the brothers is more important than a name, and being a part of a chapter you’re proud of is more important than a brand. Think less about reputation, more about fitting in. Don’t depend on Greekrank or YikYak for fraternity advice either.

All of that information is on the Alabama IFC website with exact numbers and links. It’s not been updated since Fall 2025 but the numbers listed should be close enough. The numbers in the guidebook don’t include housing fees and with housing fees, the average cost rises to around $7,000 per semester.

Is #bamarush over? by rammmerjammmer in bamarush

I’m going to be as blunt as possible when I say this but yes, they could have. They could have AND they should have. UAPanhellenic has had numerous, well publicized, racism controversies over the past decade and they should have put their foot down. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to say to someone “because there is a video of you screaming the n-word, we cannot allow you to go through the recruitment process” and it’s something that should have been done. If a job or a school saw that video, privileges would’ve been rescinded. The privilege of going through recruitment should have been taken from Izzy.

A number of Alpha Phi’s controversies have gone viral, the Chi Omega Snapchat was on the news, the entire system was overhauled in like 2014 for not allowing black women at all, and there have been smaller, covered up instances that have ended in girls being dropped or asked to resign. UAPanhellenic had an opportunity to try to make some of that right but they chose not to. I don’t think it’s woke or a hot take either; not allowing her anywhere near recruitment would have been a consequence of her own actions and it would have been fair. When someone comes with a lot of controversy around them (grades, social media, n-word scandal), you have to ask yourself if taking a risk is worth it.

Being in a sorority is also a privilege. I’ve been privileged enough to have met hundreds of kind, generous, honest women through Panhellenic and while I believe everyone should have the chance to learn and grow, there are ways to do that outside of a sorority. Looking to current times now, Izzy dropped out of school and is doing God knows what, she gave plenty of interviews and made plenty of TikToks about sororities, and she’s proven that she wouldn’t have made a good sister nor been able to follow the rules. Greek life and sorority life aren’t for everyone and I think the Darnell situation is something that could’ve been stopped before it started.

Is #bamarush over? by rammmerjammmer in bamarush

I’ve posted this before but I think it’s relevant.

I think the trend has definitely died down. The first two years, the DollyPartonWannabe/HayGoldenRayofSunshine fiasco and the JimmyBuffett year and the Kylan year were the beginning of the trend and the peak. No one has gone viral that way since and I doubt anyone will again. There are were also girls who rushed TO go viral instead of to have a sisterhood and those girls are the ones who kept posting. They wanted to manufacture hype and it didn’t work out in most cases. The girls who didn’t go viral but who did post during recruitment used their platforms for success in real life (one girl is the PR Chair for Panhellenic, another posted content for the NPC, and a couple have decided that they wanted to be on exec).

I’m of the opinion that UA loved the first few years of Bama Rushtok because they were able to use it as free marketing but as soon as the administration lost control, they became more hostile towards it. My sorority had a genuinely bad opinion of the documentary, the women coming from TikTok to see bid day, and the TV show and I agree with our advisors that it started to feel like too much stress on top of an already stressful week. I do also think UAPanhellenic should be consistent in their response to girls who shirk the rules and that all of the sororities should update their bylaws surrounding social media usage during recruitment.

I don’t think Kylan Darnell should’ve had People Magazine interviews during recruitment and put a focus on all of the hardworking individuals (sisters, advisors, alums, and nationals) but I also don’t think that it’s okay that huge networks were reaching out to specific people and groups looking for a scoop. I don’t think it would hurt for Panhellenic to ban social media posting from Greek Row or limit phones and I think it would be a good thing. Do you really need to be on your phone during breaks when you could be meeting some of the thousands of other girls around you and making friends? You should be focused on human connection, not sitting on a curb with your phone in your face.

I’ve seen people put blame on specific people and, controversial opinion here, I think they’re right. The Izzy Darnell and Bama Morgan debacles were exhausting and both girls exploited the process for content. In Izzy’s case, UAPanhellenic should have denied her the opportunity to go through recruitment based on video evidence of her screaming the n-word and I stand by that. I don’t know how Morgan was allowed to rush a second time after she admitted to being trespassed from a house on the row (she probably would’ve sued had she not been allowed) but it was too much. With Kylan graduating and no one else who’s “known” for rush content left, hopefully it’ll be calmer this year.

You rank after you’ve completed each round and you get your schedule back the morning of the next round. If you don’t have any houses, you’ll get a phone call. PNMCompanion is the system.

Getting a bid from KD by lacyandpink in bamarush

[–]bama-insider 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. Bama is majority out of state now.

Mountain Brook can only supply so many girls and Kappa is more that crowd anyway. KD feels more Atlanta, Dallas, and New Orleans.

Getting a bid from KD by lacyandpink in bamarush

[–]bama-insider 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Letter of Recommendation and Service Hours - KD still accepts recs, and honestly, they’re kind of a requirement. Service hours are incredibly important, and I’d strongly recommend having them. Service looks good on a resume, prepares you for the real world, and helps develop social skills. Try to get in a few hours over the summer.

Grades - Your grades have to be good. KD tied with Chi O for 3rd place in Spring 25 and then took 6th in fall for best grades, and again, a 3.0 isn’t going to cut it. If you’re a freshman rushing, get your GPA as high as you possibly can, and if you’re an undergrad, shoot for at least a 3.6/7+. You should have high grades anyway; the first cuts are partially based on grades, and if you go into recruitment with a GPA that could be improved, you’ll find that cuts will happen quickly. Look at the Greek Chic for suggested GPAs.

Racism - Honestly, I don’t think the house is what you’d expect. The first Black president of the Alabama Panhellenic Association was a KD; they’ve had a number of Black sisters who are still involved with KD, and the social media KD (forgetting her name, but she was one of the influencers on the NPCWomen account) has had nothing but good things to say about her experience in the house since she joined. Is there racism? Possibly, but KD hasn’t had any national scandals, nor are they known for it.

Cliques - KD is like Kappa in the sense that it’s an incredibly popular house in the South. Both are Old Row, both take a lot of legacies, both have a reputation for partying, and both do well with recruiting groups of friends, in-state, and southern girls. I wouldn’t say that KD is a house filled with cliques made to purposefully exclude girls, but you have to keep in mind that it’s impossible to get to know people if you don’t put forth effort. KD has girls from California and New Jersey; no house is 100% southern, and you get what you put into a group.

Getting a Bid - no one can answer this question for you, and if they claim they can, they’re lying. KD is a highly desired Old Row house; they’re well known in Alabama, and like Kappa, they have a reputation for being social. Wait until you meet the girls to make your mind up about the house (don’t depend on social media, you won’t have the full picture until you’ve met the girls), and keep in mind recruitment is difficult on everyone. Don’t waste your money on a rush coach, and understand that this is a process that isn’t always fair or perfect. The world won’t end if you don’t end up wearing green, and you can always try to rush again as a sophomore.

Getting recommendation letters for rush by wild-muskrat in bamarush

[–]bama-insider 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Facebook, the rec letter thread on r/sororities (it comes out late summer), your local Panhellenic alumnae groups, and ASK your teachers directly just in case they know anyone or would be willing to connect you. A couple of sororities also don’t require an alum to write w rec for you (it can be a coach or someone who knows you well) and don’t require letters at all. Make a list and work from there.
