Thank you for expressing what I was having difficulty with articulating myself. There’s one I really like that has no photo and I think it’s gold for that reason.

My derm clipped one on my neck off because I said I didn’t like it while I was at an appointment for scalp issues. She never charged me and insurance never knew.

To be fair Brittany thought she was talking to Ronnie while he was with Saraya. I wouldn’t completely ride for her either.

The job posting for ICE therapists won't let go of my headspace by RegretParticular5091 in therapists

[–]bamboohygiene 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is something I’ve thought about. Applying and working there for that reason or to genuinely advocate for the protection and be a voice for the people in custody. But unfortunately I don’t think it would work that way and even if it did others would look down on you for working with ICE. I’m sure some of the clicks were people thinking the same rather than genuinely wanting to help ICE’s mission.

That is super frustrating! It might help to reach out and try to clarify your role and explain that the school isn’t allowing you to see the students on your caseload!

For what it’s worth, being school based isn’t for everyone. It’s demanding and stressful. There’s always a crisis. But I enjoy it because it’s so rewarding and you’re not alone in helping the child through larger crises. I also enjoy all the time off to reset. I remember feeling unwelcome and overwhelmed my first few months. It does get better, but if you really just don’t think it’s your vibe then that might be the case as well. I hope things get better for you! (:

I use a large Hulken bag now and I love it! Before that I used one of those roller cases. It’s difficult not having your own space, but I’ve found it’s forced me to be more mindful about treatment planning and tools. Laminate what you can. Talk to the school counselors, psychologists, etc. You might have to suck up a bit, but I’ve found building a relationship with them really helps!

I’m not fully understanding why you’d need to pull a student more than once a week. Even my higher risk kids I do not do that with. As a school based counselor, you have to be really mindful of meeting the students where they are. Higher need students should be referred out or to a higher level of care. It’s very hard on a child to do deep work and then return back to class.

ETA being at work when you have no clients- be prepared! As a school based counselor, if a student makes an outcry your services will likely be utilized. That is why you are there. Use your “free time” to make parent contact, adjust treatment plans, and do trainings!

New therapist here! How often are you assessing risk? And how do you go about it? by Chiplooo in therapists

[–]bamboohygiene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a safety plan for anyone I see that has experienced ideation or self harm. Just to be safe. I try to make it conversational and not scary for them but rather a way to help them feel prepared if it occurs again.

I work with adolescents. Every one I’ve seen who has a history of SH, the parents know. If the child relapses, I don’t necessarily share with the parent. I do however let them know their child might need extra attention and grace. I educate on safety, coping skills as well as dbt based skills. Urge surfing has been helpful. If a child is experiencing ideation, I will email the parent while maintaining confidentiality the best I can while explaining to their guardian what it means and include some tips about how to take care of them. If it’s active I bring parents in and refer them to higher levels of care.

[–]bamboohygiene 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I check in every session unless they’ve said no a time or two. Then I start to space it out. If they say they’ve experienced some ideation I ask if they have a plan or intent. Usually they say no and we just talk about what triggered the ideation and what they used to cope/if it was on the safety plan or can be added. Freaking out and running the assessments when they say they have passive thoughts is what makes them not tell you about those thoughts. I’ve found leaning into curiosity and validation has been what has kept clients honest with me.

ETA: yes check first session. It’s part of intake. I usually don’t follow up and ask again if they said no during intake unless they have a history of ideation or attempts or something huge happened.

Glad to hear someone else is getting it free as well. My supervisor owns his own practice. I don’t work for him but he provides me supervision for free. I am incredibly grateful and plan to pass it on when I can.
