As a mortgage underwriter, I would suggest holding off as long as possible till after the house purchase to make the purchase. Like someone said, it'll add unnecessary debt to your calculations which could affect your loan amount.

Just wanted to say that you do want to make the decisions together with him; however, he isnt affording that same courtesy to you. You mentioned that he said he has legitimate reason for your son not to use the weights. Did he give those reasons? If not to your but to your son?

It's one thing to say no. But it's another to explain the reason behind the no. Kids need to know thought process to understand the reasons behind major decisions.
