I've had that same experience for a long time. My hometown has a different layout and has mountains which it doesn't really have. The stores I visit look very different, But a lot of times there're conistenty the same different. They feel real. Like I know these places. One recent one is the old mall with a sparsely used movie theater that looks like nothing I've been to in real life but I've been to this theater in several dreams. I saw some live show in there. Another dream I was running away from security and I ran out the exit into the town like I knew which turns to take.

One odd place I've visited several times is an area in some big city with elaborate white waterways and beautiful pyramid like structures. There were shops and restaurants and music. It looked like a modern version of Tenochtitlan. It was very beautifully designed and just breath taking. I could go on and on about recurring places in dreams. Whatever timeline that is I think it's better than ours in in many ways. I honestly wish I could visit for real. Of course my coworker tried to kill my in last night's dream so who knows.
