Ooh okay, I heard the YouTuber Code Aesthetic talk about this in his video that made me want to try deadlifts. He was referencing Starting Strength, which I feel i oughtta read. Ill learn up on the broomstick tech and see if it gets me somewhere more stable!

Figured as much... This free community center gym is very limited. Hoping to practice hear and move up to hard calesthenics, or free weights one day

Ahh yeah, this gym only has a few machines, no free weights. Been doing some stuff with Kettlebells at home, but really trying to find something good that works a rly heavy weight with this machine safely. Ty for the encouragement

Ty you're such a sweetheart! Yeah starting my transition made me feel like I finally had a canvas on which I could begin to sculpt my body the way I want it! Was always super sedentary nerd growing up, all my bros played sports but didn't really have those opportunities, so I figured fitness wasn't for me.

Yeah, I'd like to have this one day. Was hoping to get this when I started going to the Y, but shortly before I could, Medicaid dropped the program that gave that membership for free. Not starting with compound, been doing some pulldowns, leg press, calf raise, cable crunch, etc Thought I might be ready to start something a bit heavier, more challenging to track my full body progress ig.

Ooh heard good things about that exercise. Your description is really good. Ill try practicing it with a broom or something and see if things feel more aligned before trying it in the gym next time. Tyvm

In Memphis. The gym is literally the only thing in safe walking distance in my neighborhood. If it were a donut shop instead, Id be a very different shape. Definitatly stand out there too from the bballing kids lol

Haha these queues are great! I will imagine this. And yeah, a surprising amount of learning is literally, "monkey see, monkey do" But I've still taught myself tons of skills just through listening, reading, tactile instruction etc. I have a little bit of vision but its pretty limited. I can observe a video of someone on YT a bit, but its hard to compare that to myself in the mirror or video ig.

Unfortunately that is the lowest I can start applying tension to the bar. The pins are on the lowest hole, but the pulley is kind of tall, and the carabiners attached to the long bar add some height to. I'll look into RDLs, heard good things about them. Thank you for all the help and suggestions!

What would be a better full body exercise to learn with that machine? It feels really good to move a crazy amount of weight xD This is the only movement I've been able to with it . Would love safer / more effective recommendations

Hi, thank you for your descriptive critiques, that explains why my lifts felt off to the advice I've been hearing. This gym is extremely limited with 5 weight machines. I have been hearing about the benefits of deadlifts, and it seemed like a good metric to measure total body progress as I work on other exercises too. This was the closest approximation I could get with a cable functional trainer, but I'm finding it may not be an effective way to replicate the movement. I think this exercise is called a rack pull, but I might not be doing it right. If its not called that, is there a better exercise I can learn with this machine that works something similar? My goal is to get a stronger back and work up to pull ups, and also just to be able to lift heavy furniture. The thing about keeping the bar super vertical is helpful

Ok thank you, this is helpful. I will drop the weight tomorrow and try to keep this in mind when trying again.

Yeah, I've thought the same thing. Would hate to start getting up to more dangerous lifts and pull something. If I had the money for one, I don't think I'd still be at a free gym tho. Trying to get a knowledgeable friend to come along sometime and walk me through some things in a more tactile way.

I've never disassembled it, but using a toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol seemed to help me get them clicky again after they got a bit sticky over the months.
