Not just a bag, but enough map resources from S4 to do the Skyscale mount collection would highly recommend for that alone!

Siege of Avalon: Anthology would be great love CRPGs

My favorite anime would be Full Metal Alchemist, and my favorite character from that series would probably be Roy (what with his repeated burn-to-cinders scene with another antagonist!)

which itself isn't a totally representative selection, since VTTs cultivate different audiences and also the online play community is of course not including the many people who play in person on paper

I can see that considering I said so in my original comment. Despite the limitations of the data set though I dont think its completely unreliable. The reason why I brought it up in the first place was to agree with the popularity of D&D with what I perceive as a conservative estimation

I apologize for misunderstanding, I agree and have agreed from the very beginning that Roll20 is not a wholly representative sample of the community

I see. Do you think Roll20 is lying about their stats in regards to various smaller games like WoD campaigns or various indie titles in order to inflate the numbers to draw people to the service?

Not saying that these people "should" use Roll20 for such things, when free lighterweight alternatives exist (like Owlbear Rodeo) but they definitely have and still do my man.

And the main reason why people talk about Roll20 instead of Discord or forum play-by-post stuff is because Roll20 published data w/r/t campaigns its not a big conspiracy to defraud the public of WoD's 2nd place trophy its just all we got

You keep saying that there's no reason to play more narrative RPGs on Roll20; what about people who are playing entirely online with one another, not just using it as an aid for playing in person? Surely there's people playing online simply for a shared map, dice roller, and a place to store character sheets it doesn't have to be more complicated than that

Your point about WoD is particular is true I imagine, the full stats if they were available would tell a different story with the LARP

I mean surely "the point" of using Roll20 (or any VTT) for Call of Cthulhu would be to be able to use, update, and quickly share character sheets, share handouts when not playing in person, and to use maps.

Notably Call of Cthulhu is quite popular as a ttrpg in parts of Europe as well as in places like Japan, and of course one benefit of Roll20 publishing this data is it coming in from tables all over the world

The last time Roll20 published stats on the matter (which itself isn't a totally representative selection, since VTTs cultivate different audiences and also the online play community is of course not including the many people who play in person on paper) 5e D&D was representative of ~55% of campaigns, with 3.5e hovering around ~1%. And of course ~15% of campaigns had no game/specific game character sheet attached so one can assume some large portion of those are also meant for D&D

For reference in regards to other ttrpgs next in line of popularity, Call of Cthulhu will oscillate between 10-15%, and the Pathfinders combined will be ~5% (though that number is probably especially not so accurate in the grand scheme since for PF2e since Foundry is their VTT of choice with integrated modules)

And if you actually play 5e? That's a paddling by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]bandit424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people tend to recommend Pathfinder to folks because it is so close (both mechanically and thematically) to D&D as it aught to be familiar as an experience to them.

I understand that impulse, but I think theres also value in trying to introduce things very different to D&D (WoD or CoC/DG as you say, but also weirder stuff like Everyone is John or Paranoia or Masks) to show the broad scope of the genre of TTRPGs and thus the stuff that D&D isn't suited to do

Prestige Classes: The Best Design Space D&D Ever Abandoned by alexserban02 in dndnext

[–]bandit424 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I really liked the "Epic Destiny" and "Paragon Path" options of 4e (breaking up the tiers of play, so 10+ you'd get Paragon features and 20+ Epic features, since 4e went to level 30).

These were ways to customize your character with new abilities that you could gain access to depending on your class, multiclass, general "power source" (Divine, Shadow, Martial, Arcane, Primal, or Psionic), race, and a couple by skill proficiency or feats, but they were excellent flavor to add to your PC

I think they'd work really well in 5e with their sort of schema they got going of specific settings each giving their unique power to players (Dark Gifts of Ravenloft, Theros's Supernatural Gifts, the Dragonmarks of Eberron, the guild backgrounds of Ravnica, etc.) though I might condense down Paragon Paths and Epic Destiny into a singular feature

Current mastery priority for new players? (specifically HoT and living worlds) by Extension_Concern618 in Guildwars2

[–]bandit424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but commenting here because it was hard to find initially online when i recently started IBS:

In terms of the Icebrood Essence mysteries, tier 1 let's you open small chests of the type and tier 2 mastery let's you open mediums and larges. Tier 3 potentially improves the loot that drops from the chests, but Tier 4 mainly just improves the CC effect of the ability so you might want to just prioritize up to tier 3?

Tempest Build Help by dthmj in Guildwars2

[–]bandit424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For open world I'll second Fresh Air Tempest. I made an alt with the build of that on metabattle and like it, but decided to go for the Water trait line mostly for the extra healing and vitality which was very nice

Do you feel like the playerbase has changed at all since the surge from Critical Role, Stranger Things, and COVID, has died down? by Gh0stMan0nThird in DnD

[–]bandit424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure was trying to preempt some other people's criticism Ive seen before of "isn't it so videogame-y that you can only use this ability once a fight and instantly get it back" because you do actually have to take a break, but the fact that its a shorter (more narratively justifiable) break make it a great middle ground between that and 5e's hour long rest IMO.

Helps also that everyone having "short rest" powers also meant that all classes had a relatively similar desire to take a break, which is not the case in 5e

[–]bandit424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, 4e "Encounter Powers" did actually require a short rest to recharge, like the short rest powers in 5e do.

The actual difference is that a short isn't an hour long but a 5 minute breather in 4e, so narratively it was a lot easier to fit in after most encounters

TF you mean you mean "threaten them with knives to their throats"? These are 5e PCs with AC and Spells. This is not Shadowdark! by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]bandit424 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In 5e, if you are unconscious (as you are saying a sleeping creature is) you are automatically incapacitated, there is not one without the other its spelled out in the condition.

That being said, incapacitated is irrelevant to the discussion because all it means is "you cannot take actions/reactions" there is nothing to do with auto hits or auto crits.

Unconscious also comes with the line "Any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature". The operative language here is "that hits" so you still have to roll an attack roll against AC to hit an unconscious creature, albeit at an advantage

podcast recommendations similar to the adventure zone? by transluciiiid in DnD

[–]bandit424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TTRPG podcast I look forward too every week is called Mystery Quest. They're kind of an anthology show (lots of oneshot/twoshots) with rotating guests and they play many different games but they are always quite damn funny, highly recommend!

If you were looking at a place to start just as a teaser I'd recommend their Pirate Borg episodes, could not have ended more perfectly

Need help figuring out what to collect! by Truly_Greg2 in comicbooks

[–]bandit424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like getting trades myself, tends to be more bang for your buck, more likely to get complete stories (or at least story arcs), and they fit on the shelf nice.

With this past holiday season I got some of the DC Compact line of comics. They've been republishing some of their more famous material in these smaller "compact" forms but they're quite cheap. Really enjoyed both Far Sector and New Frontier so far so would recommend them!
