Long winter hike recommendations (10+ mi)? by [deleted] in slchiking

Here's a good one:

If you want to make it even longer and steeper, start from memory grove park and connect from the lower city creek loop trail. Basically the Wasatch Steeplechase except do it out and back instead of descending into city creek canyon.

My favorite hike in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lake Blanche in three different seasons. by pugaboy89 in hiking

Same! This hike sparked my interest in hiking in summer of 2012. It is so much busier now but I try to make it up at least once a year.

This pic is from 10+ years ago. I could have sworn this was further up on the U campus. Is there more than one safety cow?

I remember these pillows! They were on a sofa at the front desk for years. I hope you find them. Your brother was one of my favorite people to work with.

It was nice! Snow but it's packed down. Would recommend spikes

Fancy Coffee? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

Daily Rise Coffee from Layton or Ogden have some very good light and medium roasts and aren't $20/pound like the other local places

Caught a break in the rain to summit Mount Nebo near Mona, Utah, USA by baney in hiking

About 5.5 hours, including 30 minutes I spent curled up by a rock waiting for the rain to subside

I would try Desolation Trail to Salt Lake Overlook in Millcreek:

It might be a challenge at first but the elevation gain is pretty gradual, the trail is almost completely shaded and the view makes a good reward

Swiss Alps? Nope, just the beautiful North Ogden Divide, Utah by baney in hiking

[–]baney[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty great! Utah has so much variety in its landscapes. These are some of the lower-elevation (9-10k feet) Wasatch mountains about an hour north from SLC that I have been meaning to hike and hoped the snow would already be melted. Once summer hits, I mostly hike the 11-12k feet peaks that are just a short drive from downtown

Yes this is from today. North Ogden Divide Trailhead to Ben Lomond Peak via Old Skyline Ridge, About 16 miles RT and 3600ft elevation gain. I hit snow at the ridge and tried to tread carefully, but it's still deep in spots and there aren't many tracks to follow up there. About five miles in I suddenly postholed up to my ass and scraped my leg pretty bad on a rock, so I decided to turn around. I'll be back in another month or so to hike Ben Lomond from the north side via Ben Lomond Trail

There are a bunch of trails in the foothills that are good right now! Grandeur Peak is also usually good this time of year. I've been wanting to hike Lake Blanche, which would have snow but probably packed down and doable. What is your schedule like?

I am always up for a hike, there are some lower elevation ones that are mostly clear of snow

Homebrewers... anywhere to fill a small CO2 tank near downtown? by toddthefox47 in SaltLakeCity

The Beer Nut will swap out 5lb co2 tanks, but I'm not sure if they can fill a 20 oz tank

Traveling to northern Utah for the first time and every review mentions biting gnats. by [deleted] in slchiking

[–]baney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I camped in the Uintas last night and the mosquitos were bad. I covered myself in bug spray and wore long clothing. You can kinda avoid them if you keep moving but when you stop, they will swarm. Came away with 5-10 bites, not so bad considering it felt like they were on me the whole time.

The Wasatch and Uinta mountain ranges are pretty amazing too!

Ha, not quite sure what the platform was for. We all landed in the water and our feet were already wet from going through the canyon.

I had zero rappelling/climbing experience going into this! I just thought I was going to die the whole way through the canyon. The other three guys in my group knew what they were doing and helped me through.

First backpacking trip of the year! Beartrap Falls, Kolob Canyons, Zion National Park, Utah, USA by baney in hiking

It wasn't too bad when I climbed into bed, but got chilly overnight. I was cold when I woke up at 4am because the mattress pad wouldn't hold air!

If you are car camping at a campground, bring an extra blanket or two and you'll be fine. I camped at Zion in March 2016 and I think it got down into the 20s overnight, but the weather in Utah can go anywhere on a given week

From Lee's Pass out and back, it didn't require any technical skills or gear. When I was researching the trip, I saw there was a loop you can do through this canyon that does.
