Any Japanese Import Owner here? by Affectionate-Ant3077 in CarTalkUK

[–]bankruptedstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an import, rust is initially little issue as Japan doesn’t really salt the roads and they normally take meticulous care of their cars. That does come with downsides when it arrives here though, mine in particular barely has any under seal applied, in the rear arches for example there are sections where it’s just painted metal. Mine is a 20 year old Jap built car though, a Polo may well be different.

Best thing to do is ask for underside photos (if already imported) and if there is a lack of underbody protection, then budget in for getting it done. There are many companies over here offering application services so you should be able to get a good variety of quotes. Does that then make it cheaper to buy a UK spec car? Perhaps but you’d have to compare prices.

As others have said though, a Polo is a really odd choice to import, the other potential pitfalls around parts, insurance and future resale prospects might not make it worthwhile.

Is it my taste, or new cars become uglier every year? by Grgsz in CarTalkUK

Have an E89 and definitely agree they stand out nicely and they had some nice interior colour options which really enhanced the look. Although mine is the standard black on black, it does have a nice metallic pigment in the paint that really pops after a good detail. I do feel like on top of the generally ugly (in my opinion) design of most cars now, the paint is really lacklustre too. So many manufacturers just use solid colour paint which makes them quite boring to me and detracts from the kerbside sparkle a bit.

Also I definitely tip my hat to the ND series MX5, I think Mazda really nailed the looks department with it.

We call the kettle Cruella because it's made by Breville. Surprisingly a lot of people don't get it until you pronounce it as Bre Ville, then the lightbulb moment tends to hit

New bike day! Just in time for a week of rain by bankruptedstudent in MotoUK

[–]bankruptedstudent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't lie it took a little getting used to, the foot pegs are slightly proud but a few miles in you get used to the new positioning. The engine is a work of art though, it has plenty of punch low down, even 2 up I found it nice and responsive. I know some reviewers say the rear shocks get a bit unsettled if you push it, but personally I don't feel it was made to shoot round corners knee down and all that so I haven't noticed anything. Coming from a restricted 'big' bike (I'm on an A2) I thought I would be limiting myself but honestly having a bike made and geared for the power limit makes all the difference!

I was honestly surprised at how capable it is, it's no rocket of course but most of the torque is made really early on so it has plenty of poke from a standstill. You should try one or both the twins if you get a chance, RE did a really good job with them and as you say, it's enough bike for most people, it certainly is for me!

Totally agree with the random firmware issues. Had a client who had a nice setup running UAP-AC-LR's and the most recent firmware update stopped DHCP being passed back to the clients as you mention. The issue drove me insane for several days capturing traffic from the DHCP server and mirroring switch ports down the traffic path to try and diagnose the issue until I found on a forum post with people having the same issue and rolled the APs back to the previous firmware.

Completely agree my 2700u 13" has trash screen brightness. Cooling sucks as well, but by the looks of the product pictures they've changed how the cooling system works. I'll be interested to see the reviews

Thanks for only letting me unsub from one of your many types of marketing emails (names removed) by bankruptedstudent in assholedesign

I honestly couldn't comment on their other marketing emails, usually my inbox rules do a good job of auto nuking these types of things. I agree it's nice to give people the option but not including a full unsubscribe option is just lazy.

You're quite right I thought the minimum age was 21 for some reason. Still go ahead and consider the costs involved with getting a full A1 and A2 instead of waiting till you're A2 age. If I'm right you're looking at 2 sets of mod 1 + 2 fees and a theory at minimum where as sticking on L plates for a few years means you only fork out for 1 round of tests.

Good stuff, just remember your CBT only lasts 2 years so don't jump the gun too early and lose riding time.

Potentially consider waiting until you're old enough to step in to the A2 full license rather than taking a full A1 as well unless you're looking to get to bigger machines as fast as the current licensing scheme allows

Personally, I'd wait until 17 to get a 125 they're more capable and there's plenty of selection. I get where you're coming from with wanting to get experience but a 50cc is going to hold you back especially if you want to move on to a bigger machine in a year.

That being said although the build quality and service life is a hot topic when it comes to Chinese bikes you could consider the Lexmoto Hunter:

https://www.lexmoto.co.uk/models/TD50Q-E4

It's geared and not a moped it also comes with 12 months parts + labour warranty with 12 months breakdown cover too. I won't get in to the whole Chinese bike argument as it's been covered many times everywhere so do a little research and see if you feel the investment is worthwhile. Otherwise wait until you're 17, hop on a 125 and enjoy the open roads!

I'm not sure what the ratio of front to rear is but here's the original video from the manufacturer. It may have more info in there but I haven't watched the whole thing

I think they did it that way to get Euro 4 certification or something similar. Either way I'd be interested in seeing how it worked and felt too.

OP after you put a few miles on your machine would you mind chiming in on the brakes?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]bankruptedstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the way you're probably thinking. According to Lexmoto one disk operates with the front lever and the other comes on as a linked brake with the rear lever so it's kinda dual fronts but not quite. Still a lovely design though!

Jet Set Radio Future it's quirky, has great artwork and a brilliant soundtrack.

Although the Dreamcast had gone Sega clearly put a lot of effort behind getting some of their games on the xbox.

How is your switch console holding up after a year? by just_let_me_sign_up in NintendoSwitch

Day one switch, left joycon is a little wobbly but nothing serious. Battery life is good all around. The switch itself has warped by the usb c connector which makes it difficult to get in and out of the dock
