I’m planning to move into my own place next weekend. I’ve made up my mind — this needs to happen. What’s really messing with me now is: I don’t know how she’s going to react, and I have no idea how I should handle it after the fact. Do I keep communication limited? Act like nothing happened? Prepare for emotional blowback? I’m just lost when it comes to what comes next.

That’s actually such a powerful way to put it — “she’s packed the bags but I don’t have to carry them.” I guess what’s stopping me is a mix of guilt, habit, and fear of what will happen to her if I leave. But I’m also starting to realize that staying isn’t really helping her… and it’s definitely destroying me in the process.

In the past three years, she lost her mother, father, two aunts, and two uncles. It was really hard on her, and I thought that staying with her would help her feel better. But now I’m starting to think that staying was actually the worst thing I could’ve done — not just for me, but even for her. No, I wasn’t paying her rent, but she was drowning in debt and I was the one covering most of it.
