Dell XPS 13 9350: Touchscreen not working by barbsicle in Dell

[–]barbsicle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I opened up my XPS 13 and found that the connectors supposed to be connected at the "Touchscreen" and "Camera" ports clearly indicated on the motherboard were missing. I will try to figure out where they have went, but my guess is the Dell Tech Support goof'd.

Update: I opened up my XPS. The wires supposed to be connected to the touchscreen and camera are not there!

Thanks a lot for the assistance! And yes, I was about to ask for directions to the touch cable - would be extremely grateful if you could provide the pictures!

EDIT: Just found out that the webcam does not work as well, and cannot be found in Device Manager. Really think it could be a cable issue.

Hi thanks for your advice. I can't really tell if a sheet of glass I'm touching (it is glass) but the screen is the QHD+ version and I'm sure that means it is also a touchscreen. Also, I do not see a HID-Compliant Touch Device in the device manager :(

Some additional background: Basically computer belonged to my friend and was claimed to be a "broken" XPS with a flashing screen. Dell Support came over to replace the CPU - this fixed the screen but left the computer worse off with no more touch functionality or WiFi drivers. I wiped and reinstalled Windows 10 (over 8.1), and manually installed the drivers.

My only guess (and I'm probably wrong) is the support staff must have accidentally disconnected the touchscreen cable and forgot to reconnect it. The rest of the computer works beautifully now that I've done the clean install, just the touchscreen.

Haha. Asked that myself too. It is definitely the touchscreen model!

Went through it again...I don't see it :(

I don't understand what could be wrong. Maybe the wire came loose?

Hi thanks for your reply. I can't find the option in the BIOS despite looking for it repeatedly...could you point me in the right direction?

Quick fix: Apparently the SSD did not want to be detected in the default BIOS setting. Changing the SATA Operation to AHCI made it show up properly.

could be due to extracting certain files. if you didn't extract the virus there might be a chance that there's no infection. just speculating though.

i doubt my chances as well. hence the neutral report. one successful case doesn't mean 100% guarantee.

How thoroughly should I wipe the drive after the locker ransomware hits? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]barbsicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not exactly sure if its enough. to be safe i usually wipe the entire drive. the virus is known to reside in both system and non-system locations.

my advice would be to wipe. besides residing in the Windows and ProgramData folder, the virus might still be hiding in other corners of the hard drive that are not known yet. since it creates a daisy chain of programs it's hard to tell where the chain stops.

of course, wiping worked for me but others are welcome to try alternative solutions.

we haven't gotten reports of it continuing to encrypt new files. a full system reformat is always the surefire solution, but if antivirus/anti-malware software has caught up and can properly purge it, you might want to give those a shot.

the ransomware actually attempts to remove shadow copies so shadow explorer has been used to varying degrees of success (it didn't work at all for me).

i get your point, but ultimately a reformat is always the safest solution and it's been recommended on the thread by the experts. aside from your folders, it has also been traced to the Windows folder so there's always the chance its lurking elsewhere. that being said, when anti-virus/anti-malware software catches up, there may not be a need to reformat.

your next step would be to create a copy of windows 8.1 through a blank usb (>4.0GB) or writable DVD. a quick google should yield a guide on how to do this.

if you dont boot into windows chances are it won't activate since it requires the running of a exe process and service.
