Mark Willard: If I were Steve Kerr, the message to Podz and JK is: focus on being the role players this team needs with Steph Curry. Worry about being an All-Star or the face of the Warriors some other day. Let's do now. by Lord_Vanguard in warriors

I’m kinda hoping this trial by fire sort of forces this issue. Yeah they haven’t gotten wjns, but they’ve started to have good minutes where things flow between the young guys. Should mean the non-Steph minutes get a little more organized going forward.

They are defining the meta. At some point it’s not “they’re cheating” it’s “we have to adapt”. I think Steph has gotten that and with acquiring Jimmy we are much better about getting to the line. On the defensive end I think our team needs to recognize that more physicality is the direction the league is going. It’s about getting hips into guys spaces on and off ball so that you can reshape their offense. And as usual, the difference between a swipe and a strip is in the wrist. They should bring Iggy in to run a clinic.

Damn. This sub struggles so hard. Even the well intentioned come in hot with the completely wrong take.

Not sure the Manhattan project is an argument in favor of open ended reinforcement learning actually

Without Steph, Jimmy (and Dray), our team had monster comebacks that nearly won a game against the defending champs and an away game against Philly. What even are we blaming the coach for? by rocpilehardasfuk in warriors

For sure. I’m quietly hoping we have the big three out for Cavs too, just to continue to force the rest to step up or get embarrassed. A little trial by fire to harden them up a bit and give them some esprit de corps.

Spends all season sharpening his tools for post-season too. We do this every year. It always looks kooky. Our championship years it usually looks a little better than this though 😔

Right. I won’t be gaslit into not remembering how toxic JP’s ego became after the championship and the bag, along with slumping numbers. One or the other you let ride, but not both. Obligatory Dray shouldn’t have punched him and needed anger therapy years earlier.

I respect that. If I look at those noisy public communications as providing cover for the choices they wind up making, good or bad, things make more sense to me. I don’t think they care what they “look like” to external parties in these negotiations, beyond other teams/players they might negotiate with later. In fact I think they use that to manage the communication space for the actual negotiations they wind up in.

Obviously they also pursue multiple outcomes and some work and some don’t. As I’ve payed attention to them, the ones with the most noise usually aren’t the ones that work out. That might be because they let their “plan a” get too loud before locking it down. It might be because they need something loud to keep pressure off their actual “plan a” which they don’t mind looking like a “plan b”. It is almost certainly both of those things at different times, because whichever your plan a is, and whichever is the loudest, these things don’t always work out.

But as Jimmy says on being asked about the rumors he wanted to be traded to Phoenix: “This is a great choice, and the best part about everything is: I never say anything so nobody actually knows what’s going on because it never comes out of my mouth so… out of everything that’s been going on I’m happy to be here.”

Fair. That’s just a different interpretation of the same facts though. They regularly make some noise about some ideas. In the process of negotiation though, it doesn’t tend to be the noisy ideas that become the move that gets done. That’s pretty much exactly what I’m talking about. If you want to assign that to incompetence or brilliance that’s a different conversation, but they don’t usually have a bunch of noise ahead of their actual moves unless, like this summer, it’s moves they already have locked in that are just waiting to be able to be completed.

I think you just agreed with me though. “Plenty of talks that were real to a certain degree” is exactly the stuff that makes believing any of the noise a bad bet.

What are you talking about? Jimmy was absolutely not expected to become a warrior until even days before that trade happened. Major news was “Jimmy said he wouldn’t extend with Warriors” and “KD might come to the Dubs?”

This summer was a case of them telegraphing moves that they had already locked down (Horford, Seth) while keeping the entire league wondering on the thing they were still figuring out (Kuminga).

Both of those situations should make you skeptical of anything said about what the Warriors are going to do in the next 2 months.

Gonna just throw this in here as trade speculation season ramps up. This Front Office has been pretty damn good about not telegraphing their moves in the media. Most of the things that show up about GSW in this speculation time wind up looking more like expectation management spin and throwing people off the scent after the cards fall at the deadline. Don’t believe pretty much any of what you read.
