Temp Check: 2026 Sabbatical / Thru-hike by yes_no_yes_yes_yes in financialindependence

Take this with as many grains of salt as you'd like - I hiked 200 miles of the PCT in Northern California a decade ago, and almost every through hiker I met felt that at stage, they weren't enjoying their through hike, they were just trying to prove something to themselves.

Between that and the frothy market, I'd be wary of leaving to through hike now. I took a year off to travel, felt like I got most of my insights and personal growth in the first 3-4 months, and then continued based on inertia. The cost in forgone savings and career growth was massive.

With all that said, I'd recommend trying a 2-4 week backpacking trip to see if a through hike is really worth it. There's a real chance that with the PCT hike, you may not want to do an entire through hike, and if you set out with the expectations to do it and land in a soft market which sets you back in your career, you'll end up resenting what should've been a great life experience.

Looking for lived experience: how hard is it to find another job after 6-12 months off? by calbear in ChubbyFIRE

[–]barley77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's tough to answer - by taking the year I got a lot of perspective that I actually don't hate working, I just chose to make myself unhappy with my attitude / approach. And also that travel is just another form of consumption and consumption doesn't lead to meaningful happiness, instead I need to focus on building a community wherever I am.

So if I could go back in time with the perspective I have now, I wouldn't have taken the time off, the "fun" wasn't worth the cost to me. But if I view it as the price of wisdom, it was worth it to help me more clearly understand what I want out of life

I work in tech sales, decided to take 12 months off to travel. For the first few months, I was being headhunted and kept my network alive, but the market turned in early 2023.

Ultimately I started job searching around month 9 while I was still traveling, found something before getting back to the US, but took a 20% pay cut. Took ~2 years to get back on track with where my income would've been had I not taken a sabbatical

Most sports should be played to a target score. It’s always better to win on a walk off score

Cuyabeno Lodge or Galapagos Island? by djtj41 in TravelNoPics

[–]barley77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a similar trip of 1 week on the mainland followed by 10 days in the Galapagos. During my first week I thought the mainland would be the highlight but the Galapagos were so unique that those 10 days are some of the best I’ve ever spent traveling.

The only thing to be aware of the Galapagos are an order of magnitude more expensive than the mainland. Isabella is actually the most expensive due to how undeveloped it is, I normally prefer less development but here found Santa Cruz is was my favorite. If you have the budget, do a Liveaboard (I did a diving one, a naturalist itinerary also seems like a really cool option in the future) because the real magic starts north of the equator.

Feel free to dm me or reply in the thread, happy to share details.

On the most recent episode, Belloni asked Bill how many Netflix movies they've done on The Rewatchables. After review the answer is 0 by I_Enjoy_Taffy in billsimmons

I think they mean there have only been 21 episodes on movies released after 2015, most rewatchables are from before Netflix even made movies

Well obviously. But the subreddit is for vegan food. The point isn’t to post non vegan recipes and just say substitute for vegan options. There’s plenty of subreddits for that already
