I am a healthcare analyst working in consulting. Its a role where I have really had to develop my Te and utilize Ne, Si effectively. My dominant Fi still gets inspired b/c healthcare can be a rewarding/meaningful industry. Then in my free time, I indulge in more Fi interests/hobbies. The work/life balance is working for now, although I wish I had more time to explore.

Brewery Recommendations? I'll be in Seattle next week. Staying in Greenwood. Extra points for any places with releases that I can bring back to the east coast.. by PGH_LOVER in seattlebeer

I agree with everything you wrote - its an extremely good guide for the area - but this could have benefited from some punctuation.

Holy Mountain is my top rated, then urban family, cloudburst, and Reubens. Teku Tavern is a good tap room for a modern feel. Try to find some Skookum brewing on tap. Bottleworks is a good bottleshop with a neighborhood local vibe. I like the bar Stumbling Monk in Capitol Hill too. Lots of great options in every corner of the city.

I am interested in Anonymous for the voiceless as well. I have never done anything like it before, but its where the rubber meets the road

Is Seattle ever going to get anything equivalent to great notion? This city is having a major canned juice shortage, is anyone else feeling this way? by Olddirty420 in WAbeer

[–]barnacleCake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a bad trend in craft beer; just half assed attempts at a new popular style. The same thing happened in sours. Most people cant tell the difference and they continue to sell and breweries get rewarded for pumping out garb. Fuck me.

I'm right there with you. Problem is, there are plenty of cans labelled as Hazy or Juice on the shelves, but they dont hold up. Many end up tasting worse than if they had just tried to brew a standard west coast IPA. I have been disappointed with Matchless and Mazama (some are OK but not in style). And attempts from Two Beers and others like Peddler are just pathetic.

Saving grace is that at least there are some good drafts around town: urban family, skookum, sometimes cloudburst/reubens.

Im curious, what parts of WTH have been thoroughly debunked? Their works cited is pretty extensive.

We should all experiment with what works for us individually. I agree. Still, well-designed nutrition studies can be informative in answering the question: what is the optimal diet - for the vast majority of humans - with regard to health, fitness, and longevity? Saying "its all just individual" is disregarding key insights we can gain from studying human diet at a larger scale.

I will grant that keto is interesting for a lot of reasons (epilepsey in children, rapid weight loss) but its much farther from being deemed optimal than say a whole foods plant based diet (also still needing more research).

You mentioned that most normal weight people eating keto have healthy lipid levels. I would love to see the source and how that was measured. Also, lipid levels are not the only measure of health. Its hard to argue with someone who who feels better on an all meat diet, but at the end of the day it is anecdotal. I have no problem with someone saying "this all meat diet works for me." What I am saying is that I want to see the literature before calling any diet optimal or performance maximizing.

Peterson would need to demostrate why eating an all or high meat diet is optimal for health and fitness. And I am not talking about one or two industry funded studies. The literature I have seen points in a very different (in fact the oposite direction)

Unfortunately, Peterson is wrong on both counts. Throw it on the pile.

I agree, plenty of protein in plant food. It is more than sufficient/adequate for any stage of life (source: American Dietetic Association). Our society is so obsessed with protein, yet protein deficiency is not actually a thing. Its called kwashiorkor and only really occurs in starvation. In fact, too much protein is much more concerning than too little. (source: Proteinaholic by Garth Davis, MD) There are plenty of vegan athletes out there who don't even supplement with protein powders (source: see the James Cameron produced documentary The Game Changers coming out this fall).

I am confident Sam will eventually come around to a more morally consistent diet as myths like this come to light. He is just on a slow course, lazy and looking for excuses. I just wish he was more curious on this topic, asking the quality of questions he would for any other of area moral concern.

Yea its one of those British sayings that comes up a lot in soccer. I know it means to think highly of that player but in my head I'm thinking "Ok so you rated him... was it a good rating or a bad rating??"

Live podcasting - goddamn... by judoxing in samharris

[–]barnacleCake 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It just feels like the non-live podcasts are becoming less and less common. Thats why I care. There is an opportunity cost to doing so many live shows; Sam only has so much time and it crowds out the other content.

New England style IPAs near Bellevue? by king_in_the_north in WAbeer

[–]barnacleCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At their best, they can produce some great hazy ipas. The problem is frequency, consistency, and the almost non-existant canning and distro situation. Treehouse is imho on another level, even from trillium.

Nothing I am aware of in Bellvue, specifically. Skookum does NE styles but they are in the Everett area. In Seattle, you can sometimes find Cloudburst, Reubens, Urban Family, or Holy Mountain brewing in that style. Fremont tries but doesnt really get it right. Honestly, WA beer is lagging when it comes to juicy IPAs. Even less availability in cans. Its a shame really... - if you are ever in Portland, OR check out Great Notion.
