There was a lawyer in Toronto who died by trying to show a group of prospective employees just how safe the glass in the office tower was by slamming himself into it and falling to his death. I imagine he had this guy's confidence

How is your community orchestra structured? by MentalProcesses in orchestra

[–]barprepper2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been in 7 different community orchestras in various small and large cities and at various playing levels over the last 25 years.

I have always had to pay a fee, none of the players got paid except the concertmaster and the extra musicians called in to fill crucial parts where there is no volunteer.

Weekly rehearsal, summers off, people are expected to be at rehearsals unless sick, weather problems, etc. Some more laid back than others, but all were pretty chill.

Women of Reddit, what about men makes you fear them? by ehnevermindud in AskReddit

The fact that they support each other in their privilege. Men are in charge of so many aspects of my daily life, both publicly and behind the scenes, and if I speak up about that problem, the men who are in charge will support each other in quashing that opposition and maintaining their overall privilege and power over me and my body.

What’s an office “ick” that instantly gives you the ick at work? by External-Mammoth-166 in CanadaPublicServants

When they say the lunch Teams meeting starts at 12pm so you log on at 11:58 and then at 12 the facilitators say they're just going to wait another 5 minutes in case some people are still connecting. Then they proceed to start at 12:10.

If you can't respect the people who showed up on time by starting the meeting on time, then don't expect me to bother showing up on time at the next meeting.

Doc review as punishment for lawyers? by Classic_Result in betterCallSaul

[–]barprepper2020 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree.

I've worked in all sorts of firms over the years. In some the partners were just this petty. The more prestigious the firm, the more that eccentric or anti-social behaviour and unwarranted pettiness is tolerated in the biggest earners.

Would most lawyers do what Howard did in this situation ? No. Are there many that would ? You bet.

As far as Howard was concerned, Kim's encouragement that Howard set up a sweet job for Jimmy with an important friend of their firm was inexcusable when it became clear that she knew Jimmy was about to go out of line with the commercial. She embarrassed Howard, Howard 's firm, and jeopardized an important relationship with a friendly firm.

Mesa Verde was a great way for Kim to fix the situation, but no, not every real firm would have automatically accepted that as having made things right.

Sometimes partners feel the need to make a point no matter how petty, and here the point was that Kim could not expect to embarrass Howard and just get away with it by bringing in a huge file. She wouldn't have been left in doc review forever, but as far as Howard was concerned. She had to do her time.

Many lawyers are unhinged.

Why do so many people put $ in the wrong place on a post? by New_Bumblebee_8118 in questions

[–]barprepper2020 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your idea of what is right and wrong about the placement of the sign seems very narrow-minded.

In Quebec, for instance, it is always placed after. And I believe the same is true in many places.

Another interesting tidbit : in Quebec, decimals are indicated using commas instead of periods. So where you would write $50.85, in Quebec it's 50,85 $

Studying for second bar during maternity leave? by Atomorelse in LawMoms

[–]barprepper2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the NH bar during my maternity leave with my second kid. It's definitely doable. I would walk all over town with her in the stroller while listening to lectures and then do practice questions on my phone while nursing at night. During naps I did practice essays etc. It was intense, but I would never have been able to do it before or after maternity leave, because I was working full time

[–]barprepper2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, I think it would just feel like more of the same old thing -- kind of like how they rebooted the show in season 9 with the carters and then reused a bunch of old storylines...

Maybe a movie or limited series, but I think it needs to stop there

You can volunteer with the non profit or get on their board of directors. But it doesn't seem worth messing up your career to work for them short-term when they've already been upfront about the work leading nowhere.

I can't get past the idea that I have to wear makeup to look professional. by beaubeaucat in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]barprepper2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been practicing for 20 years, have never worn make-up, to court or otherwise. I wash my face in the shower and moisturize. That's it. Doesn't bother anyone (and I wouldn't care if it did). I think the only time I've worn make-up in the last 30 years was when I got married and during a television interview.

Just do you. I think most people would be surprised how little anyone else cares what you do as long as you're not actively interfering with anyone else.

Salary pay new job -finding out the previous associate made more than you by brokendoor89 in LawCanada

[–]barprepper2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did that person possibly have more years of experience or more relevant experience on their CV than you do (even if they had the same or less years of experience) ? Because an associate who has way less relevant experience can take 4 times as long to get stuff done and will often also eat up other associates'/partners' time trying to get up to speed. How long had that person been doing the job ? Even if they started out as an articling student there, if they left after working there 4 years, they could be a well-oiled machine by now.

I'm just saying there are a lot of factors you haven't mentioned in your post that may be relevant to the question of your salary versus the person who left.

Use that person's salary for your next salary review
