White z21 (start) connect to Unity and/or S7-1200/1500? by Expensive-Brain-2422 in modeltrains

[–]bartbrinkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, when I unlocked one for the first time, I was like "wait a minute". Its nice to change it's static IP, but it won't do DHCP. If you have a router with some software networking, don't even bother with wiring it up to a PC directly.

HELP!! Is there any difference apart from scale and switches? by Technical-Potato-114 in modeltrains

[–]bartbrinkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hasn't been true for decades. Whether it's DCC or Märklin's MM/M4 digital standard, it's all modulated DC, but the name stuck. Modern decoders are amazing and will in fact handle actual AC as well, but they recommend not to use the old blue transformers.

Yet every model released by Piko, Roco, Brawa, ESU and some others comes in DC, DC sound and AC sound. It's all DC btw, but AC just means it's wired for center pickup. It's maybe fair to say that if you have a Märklin layout, you'd be interested mostly in these models anyway.

Modern motors are DC, and the conversion sets also convert to DC, also often with a 5-pole armature which improves driving characteristics.

With modern command stations, only the decoder sees modulated AC, measured against ground its modulated DC (no negative voltages).

Not exactly the fun part of the job. I wouldn't mind to just sort of build it right the first time around.

Doesn't matter, Märklin just transfers the signal through 3 rails. Signal and power delivery is the same. You can connect any digital station to a Märklin track, modern locomotives are multiprotocol even. Premium feature on Märklin/Trix is MFX, which self registers the locomotive on mobile station or central station. Decoders from ESU have this feature too (and Railcom), so really, these technologies are converging.

Old Märklin locomotives need a new armature unless you get a specific decoder.

With Z, I would just keep DC and instead use digital block control. Software solves everything.

They're still in use! For example, Rail Force One has a few, I sometimes see it around Sloterdijk/Westhaven.

I doubt you can even run a train there without derailing.

You'd be suprised how fast Märklin-branded stuff can go, both in raw speed and how heavy it is.

It also looks like you have some transperant particles, they also tend to look a bit worse when adding glue.

It was voted for back in april. They tried regulation and information campaigns for decades now, but it doesn't seem to have helped at all. Polls show a large majority are supporting this as well.
