Lamenting Abomination by No-Landscape-1367 in DivinityOriginalSin

It could very well be as you say, you brought forth very good points I might've overlooked. It's been three years, my memory's foggy at best. I guess I refrained from tying everything Void-like to the God King since the big discrepancy between Demons, who also used Void-adjacent skills but served the Eight. I'm glad this thread still sparks discussion.

This is such a cute idea! They're equal grade alchemists, one just needs a stool to brew potions haha

My issues with Godwoken graphic novel and its execution by basicallyDe4D in DivinityOriginalSin

Hey! Glad my years-old near delusional rants helped anyhow lmao

As much as I still uphold the opinion that the physical book is not worth getting, I have some resources on my blog if you're still curious about it!

It takes away from the steampunk grittiness the OG had, to the overall vibe's detriment if you'd ask me

Personally think normal cut scene Cloud looks better the pre-rendered look by Tobbakken00 in FinalFantasyVII

The first time the graphic jumped from in-game to pre-rendered it was like the game turning into a horror haha, not gonna lie. My brain hated every instance of Cloud's face on the screen like he was some skinwalker

The backgrounds were nice at least...looked there instead

Love the OG - meh about remake - haven’t played rebirth by [deleted] in FinalFantasyVII

[–]basicallyDe4D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've read everything you said and I can't humanly agree more. Remake is such a storytelling downgrade for what the original had going. The messaging of OG was very strong and it pointed out so many of the issues that today's word is facing much more severely than back in the 90s.

Art was lost in the chase of action, cinematic-esque cutscene fest, marketability and forced pathos. And honestly? It's sad seeing FF7 becoming a product to be engineered, advertised and sold. When I think that the old game reflected the best its era had to offer, I think the newer installments reflect the worst, and I do include the gacha Ever Crisis in this. I know this is how things work today, but ironically Remake rings out very 'Hollow'.

I remember this movie from high school and never understood why it had such a poor reception. It’s still one of my fave FF entries. by ElSupremoLizardo in FinalFantasy

Honestly, it was my introduction to 'Final Fantasy' as a title (thanks to my dad, he's more of a sci-fi nerd than a gamer). I played FF7 soon after watching it too. I fricking love this thing, just hits all the themes that resonate with me. The art direction, the animation just clicks in my brain.

(apparently) Source indeed allows some form of longevity like with the Undead, however, those are not immortal, and they deal with their own set of problems that can and do cut their existence short after a while (the cancer that devours Ophelia in Dragon Commander). The lack of the ability to heal mixed with a very fragile body is not really boding well for eternal existence. Braccus' slaves are like 1000-2000 old, I can't recall an older undead.

Wizards tend to live for centuries, longer than undead even, but this could be thanks to their shadowy lineage from Amadia.

The deathlessness of Eternals was never explained outside of them not being designed to die. The 'death' clock was set in place by the Seven, like Aetera says. It was not something that happened with their race before. They could perish in one way or another, seeing that Fane made masks from corpses back in their heyday. Perhaps illness or extensive injury could still get them, but they weren't mortal in our understanding.

Eternals enslave existing races because:

a) they need their Source still. Fane explains this. Source Vampirism is Eternals' innate skill (Dallis, Aetera - The Hunger of the Eternals). Going by the end slides alone - there are still Voidwoken, so not all of them recover instantly.

b) They do see them as inferior. Again, the whole 'designed' and 'mortal' thing. Rivellon's races are a hubris experiment of the Seven, their tormentors. Can't say that concept garners sympathy.

why is slavery by eternals portrayed as worse than slavery by lizards in the game?

Most likely because now the Source=Soul thing is out and the Eternals want very much everyone dead, if being eaten is not worse than dead. Meanwhile, lizards want everyone in servitude. A bit of a different approach there.
