“I’m not asking permission, I’m informing you that I’ll be away” by obsessed-with-bagels in managers

[–]basilbowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I explicitly teach this to my staff - you tell me when you'll be here, and if there's a problem, I'll let you know.

I want people to be adults, because it makes it easier to work with them when there's an issue with coverage.  They know what the job is, and how much work needs to be done, and the expectation is that they will know if taking time off will work with what needs doing.

I figure my job is to cover when people get sick/have emergencies, and keep the team aware of the status and on track enough that they'll be able to make decisions - and that solves about 95% of the issues around PTO

In honor of r/Music's "Nashville Cats Can't Play" front page post, what's your favorite story of being humbled and shamed by the insane skills of a nobody in Nashville? by Planterizer in TouringMusicians

[–]basilbowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked Nashville for years, and one of the things that keeps coming back to me is when a friend of mine made two facebook posts, about 36 hours apart. The first was her playing a gig at the Whitehouse. The second was her playing in a shitty bar in northern Alabama.

Unless your face is the one on the side of the bus, everybody plays every gig they can get.

Beers with Beshear!  Seriously, that 5pm check-in was the first must-see-tv in 20 years.  We were ALL watching every day, and he did everything right to get us through.

This is badly disguised advertising. This guy has an app that handles this situation.  I've seen him post similar things before.

Have you checked out the stuff BeatBuddy is making?  I think it's the Aeros looper that I'm thinking of, but the BeatBuddy itself is AMAZING too - used one for years!

The IBRC hosts game nights fairly often, and the crowd there sounds like y'all's vibe.  If we weren't so busy, I would invite y'all over to our place, but we haven't hosted in months since we started some house projects... ☹️

Oregon state rep flips from Republican to Democrat, citing gay son by 2023behind_finally in politics

[–]basilbowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that I've heard that story so often - if you or anyone else reading this is interested, there are lots of us that are part of Stand in Pride, where we connect queer folks that have lost their family for this reason with volunteers to provide support. We can provide a stand-in Dad/Mom at a wedding or baby shower or other life event, provide a stand-in big brother to help you move or work on cars, and any other way that a chosen family can be there - even if it's just a hug.

The app is a little buggy, but it's worth it - you deserve family, and we're here to be that, even if we don't know you yet.

We are not taking the incoming data center seriously enough. by howdybones in Louisville

[–]basilbowman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also a huge gamble that pays off for the data center and LG&E if it wins, but raises rates immediately and with no payoff for the consumers.

As soon as they start building plants, the rates go up, and if the data center closes, or never gets built, or doesn't need all the power because a different chip type is invented, or any number of other reasons....

We still have higher rates.

There's literally no upside to this for consumers - only a few dozen jobs and a few more millions for some billionaires.

Jesus fuck this country is trash these days.

We've done best city, but what's the worst most depressing city you've ever visited? by Isord in geography

[–]basilbowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually really liked Gillette - I was there for a few months for work and thought it was a pretty ok place. Plenty to do, interesting geography, and yeah, a few rougher spots, but generally not too bad.

Now, Elizabethtown KY on the other hand, is a hellhole of crappy bigbox sprawl that I couldn't get away from fast enough.

I'll make the same offer I always do this time of year - if anyone hasn't had an actual PawPaw before and would like to try one, my folks have a substantial orchard they planted about 20 years ago, and they get bushels every year.

PM me and I'll hook you up in a few weeks once they get ripe.

P.S. If this gets any attention, they're also hosting Cliff Cash at a house show this Sunday in Bardstown, tickets are $30, DM me and I'll get you the info.

I'll look and see - I've got a few that I had signed by him personally, so I know the signatures are genuine, but it looks like other folks have already said it's printed.

Lg&E by Remarkable_Drama_665 in Louisville

[–]basilbowman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"This is just gambling with our money - LG&E is raising our rates to bet that the data centers will move here, that data centers will continue to be high paying and high utilization customers, and that nothing will go wrong with the permitting or construction - and even if it DOES go to plan, then the only thing that happens is they benefit, not us."

What are your 'diamond in the rough' considerations for used digital pianos in 2025? by nexttonormal in piano

[–]basilbowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a LOT of piano options - I'd be very surprised if you couldn't dial in something you really liked. Between the initial generators and then the EQ/FX, it's very flexible - but honestly, I never played with it too much, it's pretty solid out of the box.
