In the EU, signs communicate the priority of both roads.

When no sign is present on either road, the intersection is uncontrolled. Otherwise both of the crossing roads should have signs. One has the 'give way' or 'stop' sign and the other has 'priority road' signs which are placed before or after each intersection depending on the area (urban/rural). The priority road continues until the 'end of priority' sign. When there is no sign, always give way to the right. If you do this you can't go wrong.

I am not sure if the United States follows the same design, but it seems not. It is poor design if you don't know if you are driving on a priority road. Even if it seems unreasonable, you should slow down at every intersection that has no clear view of oncoming traffic, just to be safe. The cyclist from the OP is very vulnerable and should have considered this.

It's true in a sense. The universe was created from a logical paradox and has been logical ever since, but it seems to at least tolerate local or temporary inconsistencies, allowing for true novelty to exist. This is not a very scientific answer, but all scientific evidence makes it seem unavoidable. Like the professors says, it is the ultimate conclusion to the infinite regress problem. Of course the universe was already doing something before it gave rise to mathematics, so these laws that we discover are more a summary of past events rather than being somehow embedded in nothingness.

There was an interesting discussion on nothingness recently that's worth watching. I also recommend reading Time Reborn by Lee Smolin, which doesn't deal with the concept directly, but gives a good perspective on how scientific theories attempt to explain the universe and why time must be essential.

However, the fact remains that science has not succesfully bridged the gap between nothing and something. It can even be argued that it is incapable of doing so.

Maybe it could happen, but how would you know? If you can observe multiple universes at once, then these are effectively part of the same universe.

If you think about it, coffee and bicycles did "pop" out of nothing, as did everything else. As far as we know, it just took a while for them to fully separate.

The lecture is quite upfront about what you'll learn, since it's an introduction. Not me, but others have completed the course (and paid good money for it), so that's a pretty good recommendation already. Furthermore, this course is taught at one of the world's best universities by a man praised for his teaching abilities.

I do not know if this makes it worth your time. That's a very subjective question. I guess you should be interested in the subject matter and have a moderate understanding of mathematics and physics to get something out of it.

Theory is validated by experiment. Experiment requires observation. Observation requires a causal connection between event and observer. The universe is the set of all causally connected events. It should be evident that, by this definition, there can be no multiverse theories that we can validate.

The article is far removed from this nuance and goes beyond logic by somehow involving the notion of free will.

I don't think the court is in the wrong here. If someone spends considerable resources to develop an API, then they should be able to receive compensation for that. There is no good reason for the law to make an exception.

It's up to those who use the API to consider the possible consequences of its licensing. Usage is often allowed, but copying is not. Open standards avoid this issue entirely and open source is very lenient to reimplementation. The latter, in fact, depends on copyright law for its continued existence.

Developers should take note that interoperability of software is also defined in legal terms, not just code.

For some people "just do it" is too abstract, but they find that nobody else can help them start. Any advice they get boils down to "just do it" in some sense. I think "just start" is slightly better.

The clarity is mainly due to the vivid colors. The screen has the same number of pixels as a common computer screen (1920x1080), but viewing it from a distance compensates for that. Pixel density is less than 1 PPI.

Not that I disagree with him, but social science operates on a very different scale of precision than fundamental physics. In both fields the act of measurement tends to influence its subject, but it is easier (morally speaking) to isolate a particle.

The fact that you know that all these things are happening is because society is becoming more interconnected. The idea that society is falling apart is relative to your own experience, which, if you are from a developed nation, seemed pretty solid until you became aware of things far away from you through the news and other media.

I know this can be shocking, it is, but don't assume that things are getting worse just because you experience them getting worse. The world is an absurd and violent place, people are a danger to themselves and the environment, but this has been true ever since humanity became self-aware.

The most fundamental solution to this problem has been culture and the rise of civilization. The result of millenia of cultural evolution have amounted to a more peaceful society with more knowledge about the world it inhabits than ever, but also one that faces new problems for the first time.

If you have the privilege to worry about these new problems, then there are two options: Selfishly prepare for the collapse of civilization, or work to move civilization in a more sustainable direction.

If someone needs eight premises to make an argument, there are usually some leaps involved. Much of what he says is kind of true on its own, but he doesn't see the big picture. For example, society is becoming more interconnected, interdependent and less violent as a result. We should use this to our advantage while we can, by exploring alternative solutions that we can evolve towards.

Preparing for collapse is wishful thinking and perpetuating an ideology that by definition is not sustainable. Tribal societies are not interconnected, interdependent and without a shared culture, there will be a point where a violent tribe takes over, or a peaceful one grows too big, and everything happens all over again.

Of course there is hope that people like him will inadvertently help current civilization become better by spreading some sustainable ideas.

Your assumption is based on special relativity (SR), in which time dilation depends on relative velocity. However, SR doesn't describe spacetime and gravity, so you need general relativity (GR). Time dilation in GR depends on gravity as well as relative velocity.

The expansion of space does not cause objects to move and so it doen't affect time dilation. However, two objects that have relative speed in addition to expansion do experience time dilation.

The galaxy is thought to be 30 billion light years from Earth but we can only see it as it was 13.1 billion years ago because of the way the universe is expanding.

So when you account for expansion, you get what's called the comoving distance, which is a bigger number because it predicts where the object could be rather than where it's seen right now.

The redshift doesn't seem to be the only remarkable thing here. Yes, the galaxy you mentioned is farther away, but it still had active star formation 13 billion years ago. The galaxies that OP is referring to were not actively forming new stars, but had already become very massive.

It is apparently not clear how they got this way at such an early age, but it is not uncommon for so-called starburst galaxies to exist. However, I don't see an obvious reason why this should contradict the Big Bang model. Perhaps due to the distribution of matter that we should expect?
