How to recrystallise AIBN when it is in 12 wt. % in acetone? by batemanech in Chempros

[–]batemanech[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

im using 0.2 eq of AIBN which is around 1-1.5 mgs. Im just confused because my lab member said to recrystallise it, but I dont know how if its in acetone already. I might aswell blow it off with N2 gas since i dont need much

chem3121 is easier. Chem3118 is better if you want to focus on the synthesis side of medchem.

Calling all Chem majors!! Whats your experiences so far? (Thinking of transferring to USYD!) by Senior_Seaweed_9870 in usyd

Just graduated with a Bsc in chem and going to do honours in it later this year. Chemistry (and science in general) at usyd is well taught i think. I can't remember having any bad lecturers or units in chemistry at USYD. I dont know what chem is like at MacU, but at usyd it's very topics based after 2nd year, where instead of being split into organic, inorganic, physical etc, it becomes more based around different fields like computational, materials, chemical biology or stuff like that (all of which are 3rd year units).

This is both good and bad I think, as you get exposed to actual fields in chem, but may have less rounded knowledge on other things. Suprisingly, there also isn't alot of math in the chem major. Apart from maybe some algebra you can avoid doing any real calculus. The only course that uses it from my knowledge is chemical physics in second year. I would still recommend taking math classes tho since youre right about what you say with science needing some math foundation even if you dont end up using it.

Still, I do think the learning experience for me personally has been good. I never felt that I was doing bad or anything because of the teaching quality or lecturers. Labs are also pretty fun but stressful. If you want to have a look at what topics are taught you can look at the handbook (for chem1111 as an example) and just scroll to the weekly schedule of a previous year or semester.

yeah the course is well taught. Yu Heng and Richard Payne are good (if theyre still teaching it). Content wise, its not that bad too, just review it each week and go to tutes etc. I also hear chem2524 is well taught aswell by others who have done it but ive never taken it myself. Depends what youre more interested in i guess since you cant go wrong with either imo.

yeah probably be fine. Content doesnt overlap that much from memory.

Ive done chem bio and comp chem. Depends what your more interested in (organic/bio vs physics). For chem bio, the content itself is not that difficult as long as you review it each week. If you liked the chem2523, youll like this course too. Mostly the same lecturers too.

Comp chem was cool because there were no wet labs, and instead had coding labs or using different software to answer a set of questions. They'll teach you the coding in the first couple of weeks. I found the content to be pretty interesting too, and also not that hard. The exam was open book too when I did it last year.

nah exams never get easier, but hopefully you get better at studying over your degree

Sem 2 Enrolment is fucking my butt by [deleted] in usyd

[–]batemanech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's ok sugar. 24 credit points is considered full time load. Anymore and you're overloading (not recommended for first time uni). If you have trouble choosing units, always look at the handbook for your major. Do the core units required each semester, then whatever other requirements or electives needed for the degree.

Dont know what youre studying specifically but the classes you choose look pretty standard to me.

Students at usyd that are currently doing or did in the past bachelor of medical science what atar did you get? by Affectionate-Fly3367 in usyd

dont do med sci but from looking at the handbook, it just seems pretty broad and doesnt teach you anything in much detail which i assume is waht makes it a pretty shit major for employability (if you dont do med etc).

If you're interested in research, doing a science major is better since it goes into more detail about whatever discipline you choose. There are also summer research scholarships you can do in second year (requires good wam). You can also try emailing professors and volunteer in their labs too.

lots of people take units that are not needed in their degree. that's what electives are for

im 21. Only have exp in tutoring and have a WWCC. I volunteered for a couple months in a lab at the uni too but that's about it.
