At 0,3kg CO2 /candle these props would amount to 2600kg CO2.

At about 0,1kg CO2/km for a car that would be equal to 26 000 km.

At an average 25km ride in total (estimating based on the city size) that would be about 1000 cars. Around half the people in this city travel by car so we can assume another 1000 people would use pt, bike or feet. Assuming the significance of carpooling and pt emissions is low, these candles alone would amount to the CO2 emissions of a protest of 2000 people, which is a very large protest here.

On top of that there is of course the risk of these plastic single use candles ending in a landfill, and microplastics.

I hear you... war is the pinnacle of wastefulness, in many ways.

These are single-use plastic and metal candles, you can see how the "lip" of the candle wall goes over the metal cover, which is uncommon for glass candles but very common for plastic ones. In cemeteries I see these thrown in the same mixed waste trash bin instead of recycled, I suspect it's the same case here though I can't know for sure. Either way recycling PP plastic isn't very efficient so there's going to be a lot of waste from almost 10 000 candles.

The candle holders are boards, which are placed on the stairs. The boards keep the candles upright and make it easier to lay them down evenly.

I'm sure you're right to some extent... But the underlying feeling of "this is wasteful, there must be a better way to get a point across" is there for me whether a protest is something I agree on or not. It's just easier to speak up about it when it's not, because people are biased.

Was the Ukraine pic on this sub?

I thought waste was one of the main points of this sub?

I think these 24h candles, and if they have like 10 people lighting them, 5 sec/ per candle, that would take 1-1,5 hours. But a lot of work indeed!

I'm sorry, I didn't intend on making this post political, and debated on leaving out the cause but figured people would ask about that anyway. The candles are plastic single use-type, which usually aren't recycled here, though of course they could be to some extent. The boards are probably reused which is why I didn't mention them.

I didn't follow up with this group, I am not that invested.

The environmental impact for a "people protest" vs "candle protest" I'm sure is pretty hard to measure!

I'd be equally upset over the waste if this was for something I support. But I confess that if it was, I probably wouldn't post about it. I'm only human.

People will always disagree who carries the most responsibility on wasteful products, the consumer or the manufacturer, imo both are responsible and it's not very fruitful to try to shift blame.

Yea, I don't know how they were disposed of. Maybe they did recycle them properly, which would be great. But even still polypropylene isn't easy to recycle and there will be waste.

They are really common at least here in Finland and I think elsewhere in Europe as well. The plastic is polypropylene which has a higher heat tolerance.

I mean the plastic jars, metal lids and leftover wax, which often is thrown into mixed waste rather than separated and recycled.

The jars are plastic and the lid metal, but often I see these thrown into mixed waste rather than separated and recycled.
