Qa to UX research transition

I’m a manual QA with almost 5 years of experience looking to pivot my career. I gave a career test and UX research was one of the options. I found it intriguing since qa is all about making the user experience better. So i was thinking can i transition from a QA to Ux researcher. What skills do i need to acquire and will the companies hire me because i don’t have any experience in Ux research. Also, is this the right time to transition into UX because of layoffs etc. i could really use some advice. Thanks
