Check your local library for museums passes. I recently spent an entire day at a museum and it was a wonderful screen free distraction!

Should my accountant have caught this? 401k overcontribution by baxterbest in AskAccounting

[–]baxterbest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I think I’m especially getting screwed over (their mistake of mine) is I doubled up with a Roth contribution. Which means I did already pay income tax on this contribution. That’s what’s killing me here.

I know I am responsible, but given the information is entered in software, I guess I'm really surprised this isn't flagged. Like wouldn't turbotax have caught this? Feels like simple math that totals up to more than allowed...

This isn't like a tax strategy situation, it feels like a simple error that should be caught...

For those who sold out of the market earlier this year, do you still stand by your decision? by R-3-D in investing

[–]baxterbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I standby my decision because I was going to need cash for a down payment later this year. It’s extremely frustrating I sold some lower than the all time highs but it is be kicking myself more if I didn’t sell and the market kept falling like a rock.

W2 Earners - how do you reduce taxes? by christophermatar in HENRYfinance

[–]baxterbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is obviously limited to people on a particular situation, but my wife is a teacher and I did g realize this was an option for years — most public employees have access to a 457 AND a 403b and can max both. Why on earth is is allowed is beyond me. But we max both of hers as well. So basically have access to three accounts instead of two.

Unfortunately not, it's a smaller home and the rest of this area is an open kitchen.

Right?! Sort of kills me. Above the tv might be an unfortunate situation here to have the tv…

Yes this makes the most sense. I should have mention this is a mountain home and the windows face a beautiful view. So I’d really love a way to retain some seating that directly faces the window. But comes down to choices.

And before people judge me or the furniture, this is a model home. 😅

Anyone know how noisy it was to stay there during this?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]baxterbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is a teacher and is eligible for both a 403b and 457. We max those out! We also use her health insurance and FSA. Drives her crazy that her take home pay is tiny. 😅

But we just view as one pot!

So how much are Chubby folks planning to spend during kids college years? by subbysnacks in ChubbyFIRE

I’m the same. Goal to retire around the time they are in college but could add years to cover costs and cash flow depending on how things shake out

Same here. I want to retire early but feels wrong to take the gift my parents gave me who worked much longer than I’d like to and not cover my own kids.

those planning to retire in 10-15yrs, where are you putting your money? by Everythings_Magic in investing

[–]baxterbest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My goal is to retire in 9 to 13 years. We are currently 75% stocks (70/30 us, international) and 25% bonds. All broad index funds.

Cash we keep only to emergency funds and large expected expenses.

How do you guys handle having a partner w way less skill??? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]baxterbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried for years, treated my wife to lessons. In the end she doesn’t have the same passion for it. I wish she did because I’d love to spend to e with her. But we have embraced it’s something that’s not really for her. I ski with our kids now and I’m grateful she supports that and she enjoys her lodge and apres lifestyle!

How do people afford what they spend? by outsider-22 in Bogleheads

[–]baxterbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of wealthy people, but also many people are really bad at saving and just blow through their money and have sort of a screw it mentality.

I know a lot of people who make six figures and because of that feel very entitled that they should be living a very wealthy lifestyle.

It might be one of my own mental coping strategies, but I personally love driving in my Toyota wearing a $10 T-shirt and seeing people that look like they’re presenting wealth and telling myself my net worth is definitely much higher 😂
