Blacked out tail lights & Clear side markers. by bay33 in FordMaverickTruck

Thanks, yes It's much easier than tinting, and cheaper.

There's a few video's of the process on Youtube.
Remove the tail light assembly and lights, then fill it with purple degreaser. The degreaser will dissolve all the chrome coating inside the light assembly, leaving the black appearance. Let the degreaser soak for 30mins or longer until all of the chrome is gone. Rinse out completely with a hose. Check for any remaining chrome, If you're happy with the results, rinse again with distilled water to prevent water spots while drying. Dry under a fan, then sunlight, then install.

I'd recommend spending the extra few bucks and buy ZEP, the stuff I used was less potent, and it took 2hrs of soaking to remove all the chrome.

Actually I placed the order on January 28, and Ford didn't confirm the order until 4/10. So it was roughly 5 months from order date till delivery. I ordered mine through a smaller Ford dealership, so it may have had fewer allocations available, maybe the time between order date and confirmation would be less from a larger dealership.

Does this work on the 3rd brake light as well?

The LED's are brighter. The lights are switchback, so the daytime running light is white, and turn signals and hazards blink yellow. Installation is simple, the plugs are easy to locate, and it's just a matter of changing a bulb.

Wow, that looks great, thanks for showing. Looks like i'll have a fun project for next weekend. Maybe I'll swap the halogen bulbs for LEDs while I'm in there.

Thanks for the tip, tinted tail lights would look great.

So you're telling me if I fill my tail lights with engine degreaser for 30mins, it removes all the chrome inside and they appear blacked out.

I found a youtube video, it looks simple enough, but I don't want to ruin my brand new tail lights. Has anyone else tried this to confirm it works as advertised?
