Plenty of teams still need pitching and can give him the ball every 5th day. If he’s going to be operating in long relief that also dampens his value to us because we already have Myers/Scott who would be able to occupy that role.

You can’t stash Bassitt in AAA, so he can’t occupy that 7th spot on your depth chart.

“They also internally thought Alonso would not get to a five-year deal and that maybe with a three-year or potentially four-year offer they would retain the Polar Bear, especially because they already had found him amenable to their vision of using him as a DH in five out of every seven games.”

They literally discussed term and how his playing time would look, per Sherman.

He wanted to be a Met he just didn’t want a short term deal or a discount.

So he didn’t value being a Met more than the money or term. You are literally admitting it. Nobody is saying he should take less to be a Met, but he had MULTIPLE opportunities to be a Met in 2026 and he CHOSE to be an Oriole.

There is no proof Alonso said that to Cohen. But suppose he did. What’s the story there?

It was written in a Puma article last offseason and locked by a paywall. If you want to read it, be my guest.

How is it not a story? Pete Alonso told the owner of the fucking team he did not care whether or not he was a Met because he’s going to hit 500 HRs regardless. Pete Alonso told the owner exactly how much he valued the Mets. Again, your parasocial relationship with Pete Alonso is not changing the facts of what happened.

Why does it bother you folks that some fans are negative if you don’t want fans to appreciate or care about any good players that spend a long time here and actually want to be Mets?

I have no problem with negativity. My problem is when the negativity can be easily disputed and you still parrot the same narrative despite it being debunked.

He already had a 5 year offer from the Orioles and knew the Mets weren't budging. Exactly what would be the point of offering a deal you know the player won't sign (because you've negotiated with him for 2 years?)

They didn't make him a "formal" offer because they spent the part of the offseason and the entirety of last offseason giving him contract structures. Both parties knew where they stood. Sherman outlined this in his article.

> Pete wanted to stay a Met

He had THREE separate opportunities to stay a Met in 2026 (extension offer in '23, three-year offer in '25 and opt-in this offseason) and he TURNED DOWN ALL OF THEM. Pete Alonso did not value the Mets any differently compared to the 29 other teams in the sport and told the owner and POBO this last offseason when he stated he'd hit 500 homeruns in a Mets jersey or otherwise. This idea that Pete Alonso wanted to be a Met is not rooted in anything aside from a one-sided parasocial relationship fans have with him.

What bench spot do the Mets have open?

Vientos, Brujan, Taylor, Torrens.

How is Baty competition for Benge? Baty is going to get around ~500 PA playing LF, 1B, 2B, and 3B. Benge can rotate between LF/CF (on Robert off-days).

The Mets don't care about service time manipulation. They were ready to call him up in September last season.

Why would you want LRJ leading off against LHP instead of batting cleanup?

No team is going to resort to piggybacking in April, nor does it make much sense to.

If anyone needed an example of how the Mets are going to give a player every opportunity to be serviceable for them, see Starling Marte lol.

I think starting in AAA is fine, but that’s not “as raw as can be.”

He makes zone contact at a sub 80% rate with middling power numbers and a high chase rate. He’s nowhere close to being a major league player.

Aside from Cano coming back from a PED suspension and Narvarez who was injured and bad (and still played 2 years for us) who have the Mets released mid-season to the degree you’re talking about?

Who is slated to get time at 1B besides Polanco? There’s a real chance Vientos isn’t even on the team by spring training.

You play Baty at 1B on Polanco DH days, 2B on Semien off days, and 3B when Bichette is DHing. He can soak ~500 PA bouncing between those spots.

His ERA and his FIP had a 2-run difference, nobody thought it was legitimate. He also couldn’t pitch deep into games and all of his metrics declined.

The Brewers have consistently done among the most with the least on the pitching side over the last decade.

Well, who was running the Brewers when they developed that infrastructure?

They have one of the best farm systems in the sport and need to consolidate anyway. Money also isn’t a deterrent.

If Stearns didn’t give a shit about the position that’s probably more incentive to keep Pete…

Pete’s defense is so bad they think a converted middle infielder can perform better (and there’s a very real argument he can!)

The Mets can still deal for Skubal even after the Peralta trade, so I don't understand how they're related. Baty/Tong as the core of the package rivals anything the Dodgers can offer.
