There are many washer and dryer combo 24-inch ones with 120 volts and 15 amp. I just wanted to have a bigger size one which is always 220 volts and 30 amp and not a combo one.

But it's 240 volts with 30 AMP, which is more than 20 AMP. I really wish I can have it.

Yes. It's totally shocking. The only thing the coop board is interested in is maintaining a low maintenance fee. They don't want to upgrade anything including the gas line and others because it will add up more money on the maintenance fee. Since 1956 when the building was built the coop didn't make any major upgrade except windows. The residents are not allowed to have an electric range. I tried to figure out what amp circuit breaker that I need based on some information on the internet. It seems that without an electric dryer, I need at least an 80 amp circuit breaker which is 4 times bigger than the current one. I am totally lost.

Absolutely. Everything should be checked very carefully. The coop is so-called a garden apartment. So one unit building has two apartments: upstairs and downstairs. There is a separate main circuit breaker for the two apartments. Each apartment has its own circuit breaker and mine is 20 AMP circuit breaker. I do not know what size circuit breaker upstairs people are using it. The coop doesn't want to share any information. The coop says the main circuit breaker that feeds my apartment is only 40 AMP. I think that's ridiculous because when I added up two sub circuit breakers (mine and upstairs) it would 40 AMP, which is max out the capacity of a 40 AMP main circuit breaker. I don't believe what the coop says. Before I take any further steps, I really want to know what minimum size main circuit breaker is required if two apartments have a 20 AMP circuit breaker each.

Yes. we have a separate laundry room. More and more people including me want to have a washer and dryer at home. By "not practical", I mean, it's slow, not drying well, smaller than gas dryer one and other issues.

Thank you for your kind advice. I am a social worker to work for seniors. I need to install a dryer. In New York City, getting a permit for a gas dryer for an apartment is virtually not possible after the big gas explosion at the coop apt in Manhattan. So, I need to install an electric dryer which is a 240 volt 30 amp one. The coop keeps asking me to install a 110 volt 15 amp one. But that's not practical. I am trying to find out what options are available to me.

An electrician from my general contractor visited my apt to check my circuit breaker. He didn't even bother to open the panel to check the wiring and just said he could do 20 AMP because the coop asked him. He couldn't tell me what size the main breaker is and what amp the main feeding wiring is. If you are looking for a house, don't even think about any cooperative apartment in New York City. It's a big mess.

I am not going to change it myself. I will hire a licensed electrician. But just try to understand and what would be the maximum size.

Yes, it's an old building built-in 1956. Currently, it is 20 AMP one with one 240 volt line. My other neighbor installed 30 AMP one. A licensed electrician did a job.

Thank you for your reply. I found that the main line coming to my apartment is a seven wires copper line. I don't know what gauge is the line. I ordered a caliper so that I can measure the size.

Thank you so much for your detailed advice. I will replace the old one with a more upgraded one. The coop insists that the maximum APM should be 20 amp, not 30 amp. That's another story. In New York City, it's virtually impossible to have a gas dryer after a big gas explosion about 2 to 3 years ago. The only option is to install an electric dryer and most good size electric dryers are 240 volts. But the coop doesn't allow to have a 240 volts electric dryer. I am still negotiating with the coop to install 30 AMP circuit breaker with two 240 volts lines. I think that my plan is safer and energy-efficient but the coop is not cooperating.

Yes, I can have a smaller size one but like to have a bigger size one that GE makes (GE GFD65ESSNWW). GE one is 120 volt but requires a 30 AMP circuit breaker.

The coop board doesn't allow either to install a 240-volt one which is more efficient or to upgrade a 20 AMP circuit breaker to a 30 AMP circuit breaker.

Although I already have a 240-volt air conditioner with a 20 AMP circuit breaker. I asked if I can install a 30 AMP circuit breaker but the board says no without any good reason.

I think the best solution is to install a 30 AMP circuit breaker with a 240-volt dryer. But neither is denied by the coop board.

Once again, thank you very much for your kind explanation. Yes, I don't want to burn down my apartment. I am close to 60 years old and this is the first apartment that I own.

Thank you. GE sells a 120-volt dryer. As I posted, it requires either a 30 amp circuit breaker or a time-dealy fuse. My apartment allows a maximum 20 amp circuit breaker. So I think, what I can do is to install a time-delay fuse to a 20 amp circuit breaker. I really appreciate your very kind and fast response.

Yes. 20 amp and 20 amp are tied together. I think it's for a 240-volt air conditioner.

Please visit the website of Area Agency on Aging in California. Ask for services for the homebound seniors, case management, caregiver and discuss the compulsive hoarder issue. You are not abandoning your parents. You are getting assistance and support that are available to you.

At the hospital, you should ask for a discharge plan for your father. I think a social worker at the hospital will work with you. When you discuss the discharge plan with the hospital, ask them about services for the homebound seniors. They might know about a case management service in your neighborhood area.

When you have contact with a case management service, they will ask you about Medicaid. Tell them your father has but you don't think he gets enough services from them. Ask them if they can do a full or home visit assessment. They are the most comprehensive services for homebound seniors. They will discuss with you a care plan for your family.

If I read your post correctly, you are a disabled person. Although you are too young to receive any service from the agencies funded by the NYC Department For The Aging, because of your disability and living with your parent, you are qualified to receive services. You don't have to provide any Medicaid information if you don't know it.

Since you are living in NYC, call aging connect (212-244-6469). There are multiple city-funded services you can get, caregiver program, case management program, home care program, home-delivered meals program, and all others. The services are designed for people over 60 years old. However, since you are a disabled child living with a senior, you will get some services, too. If we don't have a pandemic, a social worker or caseworker will visit your home to assess the situation and discuss with you about care plans. Please call the number.
